We were lucky to catch up with Anne from Creative Sprinkle recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anne, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was working as a web developer and feeling burnt out. My job was more on making the back end structures of the website – the login system, data processing etc. To destress I would play this online game called Mabinogi online. It looked so cute and so pretty, I would forget my fatigue and spend all night in this tiny little world playing make believe that I was this adorable character that I was controlling. Then I had a thought – I want to work in the game industry instead! First I need characters, so in my free time I would design and illustrate characters. Unfortunately my art skill back then was horrible. So I practiced and practiced but then I’d run out of ideas and drawing became a chore. I heard of fiverr and opened an account there as an artist so I could gain more experience. I wasn’t even sure if anyone would hire me but before I knew it there were so many clients lining up to work with me – or at least more than I could handle at the time – and was earning more than my day job. I left my developer job to focus more on my art, opened an instagram account and never looked back.
Anne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a digital artist providing art services to small businesses. Specifically cute art. Only cute or cozy artworks though because I’m obsessed with cozy and cute! I help clients to materialize their beautiful ideas into reality. Wether they are having trouble using digital art tools, or just simply don’t have enough time themselves and are in need of a hand.
I also have a print on demand shop on Redbubble.com where I put up personal artworks I did for fun for sale in various different forms. I operate as Creative Sprinkle art services. ( My name is so complicated to spell! )
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Rushing and deadlines! Everyone knows great art is not rushed. It is something I learned in university and also when I had a job. When you have a deadline, you pull an all nighter to finish the work faster. But with art, the slower I go and the more time I ruminate about the subject I am working on – the better the outcome. Sometimes I have a bad week – life, chores, or unexpected emergencies happen. I get very anxious and try and rush everything to get the art commission done faster. Then the finished work would look terrible, and I end up trying again next day instead of just first getting enough rest and having to do the work only once. To this day I still haven’t completely unlearned this thing and I am very grateful for my clients for being so understanding whenever I take a little longer than usual.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The community! Getting to connect with different kinds of amazing and interesting people from around the world with similar interests. It’s like I’m in a dream! I love my clients and my social media audience and friends. I grew up being seen as a very weird kid and could not relate well with my peers or my local community. It has always been my dream to be able to find work that allows me to stay at home in my pajamas and live in my own little world.
I still can’t believe I get to earn a living doing my hobby and sharing it with people that I really vibe with!
