We recently connected with Rose Taylor and have shared our conversation below.
Rose, appreciate you joining us today. So, folks often look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight – but that often obscures all the nitty, gritty details of everything that went into the growth phase of your business. We’d love to hear about your scaling story and how you scaled up?
Your first employee hire often feels the scariest. What if they fail? What if I fail them? But we can’t do it all and we can’t continue to grow if it’s just us. My first official hire is still with the firm today. I’ve had some failures along the way with staffing, but what I often tell my own clients that are struggling with their first hire is look at your financials – what will it cost you, what are comparable rates, what will this employee do? Do they have a job description? When you have a clear idea of what this person will do it becomes easier to make that decision. One trick a mentor told me is if someone can do it 80% as good as you, it’s time to outsource. Another tip I can provide with scaling is keep track of what you’re doing day in and day out. Make notes of what you enjoy doing and what you don’t. Start keeping a list by your desk. This list will become your tasks, which will turn into duties that someone else can do. Then we created what we call a training grid. Anytime I’m doing a task that no one knows how to do, I need to document the process with notes and a video so I can train the next person. Step by step, you’ll start to scale.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am an accidental accountant. My degree is actually in business management, but my first job out of college was in an accounting department where I steadily and quickly worked my way through. Eventually up to the Controller position. My heart is in business and entrepreneurship, but I have a solid tax and accounting background. I actually enjoy tax more because it requires creative thinking – thinking outside the box. Accounting is very black and white – debits and credits – everything must balance. I have owned multiple businesses in my past, but accounting has always been a constant in my life. I started Redbud Advisors in 2018 when I saw a need in the cannabis community. A need for accountants that understand cannabis and all the scrutiny and nuances this industry faces. I am proud at where this company is today. We serve clients nationwide and have a well experienced team to help them. We strive for communication – responding to clients within 24 business hours. One of the complaints we often hear from people is their accountant never returns their call. That is certainly frustrating for people, especially when they are vulnerable about their finances. I take pride in not being your typical accountant – I am a business owner just like my clients and that allows me to see things from their perspective.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I think this is such an important part of a business. Often times your team can be your own brand – they are internal marketing. Some things we have incorporated to manage our team is monthly one on one meetings. This is where we meet with team members one on one – not to discuss their performance but just to touch base with them – what is going on in their world, what are they struggling with, what goals do they have, what dreams do they have, etc. it’s a great opportunity to build trust with each other.
We also discuss values as a team – values are not just something you print out and stick on the wall. Values help you identify who you will work with and who you won’t. They are important to your team when they actually helped to put them in place.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I always say it’s being authentic. As the saying goes – I am who I am. We work to continuously education our clients and prospects. This industry is a challenge and when someone feels like they aren’t being “sold” it goes a long way. We are communicative – we respond to your emails, calls, and texts.
