Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rose Simeus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Rose thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned all of what I know from Google and YouTube university. I spent a year researching the art of YouTube. I watched countless videos on creating thumbnails, SEO, filling out description boxes, affiliate marketing, title making, and the basics of video editing on Abode premiere pro. My cousin, Pierrick, taught me a lot as well since he went to school for mass communications.
I wish I would have taken a vocational course on video production and editing. This would have saved me the hassle of spending countless hours on the internet watching different videos. Some were beneficial and others were a waste of time. The course would have taught me exactly what I needed from a qualified professional/instructor. It’s still
something I want to do in the future to step up my game.
The most essential skills were basic editing techniques and camera presence. You don’t realize how daunting it is to sit in front of a camera with no one in the room and somehow still look uncomfortable and shy. You’re stumbling on your words and you are not even looking directly into the camera lens.
The obstacles I encountered had to do with being uncomfortable navigating editing softwares and learning to work a professional camera. Some days, I would spend long nights trying to do certain techniques and just could not get it. I would become frustrated and then just cry. I would have to take a step back, relax, and then come back and try again. It was all basically foreign to me. Also felt like I would be a burden to ask my cousin because I should know this right? The editing software looked extremely complex but once I practiced and watched a couple tutorials I realized it wasn’t as bad. Don’t let your mind get you to think you cannot do anything. You can and you will just take a little patience.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a content creator mainly on YouTube. I create short form and long form videos on Instagram and YouTube. I do beauty videos, weekly vlogs, self care routines, product reviews, etc. With content creation, I film my day to day life but try to make it more cinematic/aesthetically pleasing. My main focus is living a healthy balanced lifestyle, internally and externally, with emphasis on sharing high quality products/services with my audience. I share my daily supplements, skin care, hygiene routine, perfume scent combos, groceries, etc. Always putting people onto things that they didn’t know they needed. I bring my supports along with me when I travel, on daily adventures, shopping trips, and outings. They can see what I do on my free time while sharing products/services that I love.
I suffer from cystic acne, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots as a result of a hormone imbalance. With this, it also makes my weight fluctuate too. I like to look and feel a certain way. I enjoy taking care of my body so why not share what I do to keep me in shape and healthy. I share different products and routines that work for me to help maintain my skin and body shape. This goes for exercises, groceries, drink alternatives, dairy alternatives, teas, cold pressed juices, etc. I hope through sharing anyone who is going through the same thing or just wants to make better choices for themselves can learn a thing or two. In addition, I always get asked how I always smell so good. So I share my hygiene tips, tricks, and favorite products with my audience on how to achieve the same results based on my preferences. I’m an avid perfume lover but not an expert. They can choose to try my recs or not. It’s never forced. There are always new things coming out and I try to stay on top of them so I can see if it will benefit me and then my audience in anyway.
I am most proud of how far I have come over these 4 years and watching my channel grow. I enjoy getting messages from people telling me how I helped them with something or recommended something to them that they love. You never know who’s watching your content. I remember when I had just 12 subscribers and now over 2200 people found something interesting to click subscribe on YouTube. It’s insane!!! Ahhhh! Across multiple platforms, I may have at least over 6k supporters.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is getting personal messages from people who have come across my page or watch me saying how I inspire them or how I recommended something that worked for them. This could be a lotion, supplement, perfume, deodorant, body wash, etc. It makes me so happy because I know how hard it is to keep trying things that may not work but you see it’s working for others. I always say though what works for me may not work for you but it’s worth a try. I’m here to just give options and share what I’m doing. Also, when a brand that I love emails me to work! It’s alway a plus because wow you watch me and want to work together? Pinch me. Lol.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I originally started on YouTube posting hair videos with a sprinkle of clothing hauls. I had to pivot from doing just hair care videos because I noticed the natural hair movement died down around COVID. People weren’t really looking for hair tutorials anymore. We were at home going nowhere. I bit off more than I could chew because this required me having to do my hair way more often than usual. I’m a pretty simple person when it comes to my hair. Wash, condition, style, bun it up for the week. I don’t have the time to sit in the shower to do a full hair care routine 3 times a week on camera. It’s different when you have to stop, record, adjust a camera and shoot from different angles while being wet and cold!!! I would be manipulating my hair too much which would lead to breakage and damaged hair. Plus, I felt boxed into just making hair videos. I had to jump to lifestyle content. It allowed more flexibility with video ideas and freedom. I could easily pivot with life changes. I wasn’t tied down to just doing my hair. That gets exhausting when you feel boxed into always having to do that one thing. I lost a ton of subscribers but it was the best overall decision for me.
People were attached to my natural hair so if I cut or chemically processed it, it was a problem. I remember going from natural to a chemical relaxer. People unsubscribed which was understandable but I received comments about how my hair was no longer healthy and that I would get cancer from using the chemicals. Also how my acne was directly linked to relaxers. I had an relaxer since I was about 9 or 10. I didn’t get acne until I got off birth control at 24 years old. I didn’t even have teenage acne. I would get 1 or two zits here and there and wasn’t consistent with a skin care routine at all. Supposedly almost everything causes cancer nowadays but it’s my choice. What’s the difference between me using chemical relaxer and someone choosing to bleach their hair platinum blonde frequently? Isn’t chemically processed and damaging too? I quickly learned to not take it personal and to have subcategories under one main niche category as far as content goes.
