We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rose Lorenzen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rose, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The best advice I have given a client is to practice self-care. I believe it’s the one thing that seems to make the most difference in someone’s life. Self-care means doing what’s good for us- would be getting enough sleep, heating healthy food, drinking enough water daily, taking a warm bath, reading, going for a run, etc. Whatever makes you feel better and feels kind to you is helpful to improve your mental health. It basically means doing what is good for us. Benefits of self-care include improving your physical health, reducing anxiety and depression, and boosting your self-esteem.
Rose, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Rose Brooks Lorenzen and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Beaumont, Texas. I knew from a young age that I wanted to help others and having an amazing therapist myself as a young teen really cemented the fact that I wanted to be a therapist.
I have 13 years of experience in the mental health industry varying from residential, partial care, outpatient, in-home, and clinics. I work with clients 5 & up and specialize in ADHD, anxiety, and depression. I utilized a person-centered therapy model and incorporate modalities such as, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
My approach focuses on elevating your therapeutic experience by taking you into account. Utilizing a holistic approach allows for genuine growth in many areas of your life. I work with you to tailor the treatment specificity for your needs while providing empathy and compassion to encourage growth.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
An important lesson that I have had to unlearn is “It’s important to be happy.” Unlearning is not about forgetting the things we know or believe. Instead, unlearning is about intentionally letting go of information that may be outdated or else is plain wrong Although most of us might prefer to feel happy all the time, research shows that negative feelings, while unpleasant, can sometimes be good for us. Anxiety and fear can protect us against potential threats. Life about being authentically who we are, including pleasure and pain, happiness and sadness, love and conflict. It’s not only ok, but important to feel your feelings. If we felt happy all the time, we might end up missing opportunities to improve ourselves.
I have personally felt stressed and overwhelmed after a full day of clients and still having to come home and change into mom mode and cook dinner and be there for my kids. Despite my stress, I feel like what I am doing has a purpose. I’ll be happy when my long days of being stretched thin, but I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would most definitely choose the same profession. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else with my life.
