We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rose Garcia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rose thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Like most writers, I’ve always had a passion for reading and writing. But instead of becoming a writer, I chose a different career path and became a lawyer. Yet over time, the call to write stories eventually won me over. When I finally started writing, I thought writing a book wouldn’t be that hard. HA! That joke was on me for sure because I blazed through my first draft thinking it was the best thing ever. Later, I discovered it was awful and that I knew nothing about writing a novel. Determined to grow and learn, I hired a writing coach to teach me how to write. She was worth every penny! Knowing what I know now, I should’ve studied the craft of writing before I started writing. But it is what it is. And honestly, I probably learned way more by doing everything completely wrong. As a side note, I’m still learning and growing as a writer. I read up on the craft, attend writing seminars, and I’m involved in a Master Mind where spend countless hours on writing. It’s so rewarding and so exciting to expand and sharpen my skills, and it shows in every book I write.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From a very young age, I often had my nose buried in books about other-worlds, fantastical creatures, and life and death situations. As I got older, I thought about crafting my own tales, but instead decided to pursue a career in law. After practicing as a lawyer for a while, and starting a family, my dream of writing stayed with me until it eventually bloomed into a passion. Before I knew it, I was writing what I loved reading.
My creativity is inspired by the blending of the real-world with the supernatural realm, and I write gut-wrenching and action-packed fantasy. My books reflect who I am and feature Hispanic characters, powerful families, complicated romance, and dynamic friendships. I am most proud of crafting #HispanicOwnVoices stories, and I’m known for bringing richly diverse characters to life as I draw on my own cultural experiences.
I currently live in Houston, Texas with my super fun family. You can explore more about me and the GARCIAVERSE I’m creating by visiting my website at www.RoseGarciaBooks.com.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
When I was young, I never saw myself in the fantasy books I read. I yearned to find a book about a Hispanic character with a broken family and no money getting whisked away on some sort of magical adventure. I didn’t want to read about the Hispanic experience because honestly, that’s what I was trying to escape! I’d had enough gritty realism to last me a lifetime. Later, when I started writing, this desire to feature Hispanic characters in a fantasy world stayed with me and became the Avila family that’s featured in the Final Life Series and the Fae Bloodlines Series. They are the heart of my stories, and I love them so much!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a writer is being able to touch a reader with my story. Either with the characters themselves, or the storyline, or hopefully both, it’s my wish to take readers on a journey where they can experience something new and powerful.
