Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rose Cofield. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rose, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Creating abstract art is in itself risky. You are making something out of nothing. The risk comes in when you get out of your comfort zone and try something which is new to you. Initially I was a sculptor but when an injury forced me to give up my work in 3D, I took the plunge into 2D, abstract painting. using mixed media. I worked hard, learning as much as I could about painting using mixed media. I’m still learning! I found myself enjoying the different materials . I am now in a wonderful Gallery in Bluffton, SC LaPetite Gallerie. I am carving out a niche for myself of clients who appreciate abstract work. Trying something new was at times scary, but well worth the hard work.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I was trained as a sculptor working in marble and metals. I later became a mixed media abstract artist. I have taught in South Carolina schools in their Artists in Education Program. This enabled me to continue my work. I also gave workshops in mixed media in arts organizations. Teaching has subsidized my artmaking. When starting a piece I don’t have a preconceived idea of what it’s going to look like. I start with layers of paint, papers until I feel I have a coherent idea. I then fine tune the image. As an artist, I try to stay true to my vision. Passion and courage has sustained me and my artwork.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think when you connect with a buyer. They might have an emotional response to, or a connection with, the colors, texture or forms within my work. That’s exciting! I enjoy their response to my paintings. Those who buy my paintings tend to enjoy novelty and have an intellectual interest in art and the world around them. always fun to discuss my work with them!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Only one way to do things! Wrong. In art and also in life being creative in your approach to problems can give you unique solutions. It can broaden your skills and problem solving. In artmaking the one way approach will lead to stale, boring artwork.
