We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rose Bruno Bailey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rose below.
Rose, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started writing at the age of 38 when my new best friend ( now lifelong best friend) suggested I write poetry. I wrote for ten years, sharing my poems on the internet. I was featured on a local cable channel in NYC two years later, and I didn’t get published until ten years later. I learned my craft by doing, taking risks, and reading books of all genres. I particularly love poetry and memoirs. Later I learned the proper way to pitch and I was published in my first international magazine in my late 40’s, became a blogger, and most of my published works came after the age of 50. I’m now working on multiple projects and I’m always learning and doing.
Rose, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My brand is my work. I’m a writer that shares my words, hoping to connect with my readers. My first children’s book is Maew’s Home Journey and I do book events to raise money for animal rescues and other charities. My first poetry book is Camellia in Snow, which was my writing beginning. My work has been published online and print in local, national and international publications. I’m a former blogger at mychangeforaten where I sponsored a charity with each ten pounds I lost. I’m launching my new blog www.juicejavajoy.com on the summer solstice. It’s my one year self development blog challenge. I have some collaboration projects coming soon.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2017 we moved from West Hollywood to Houston Texas for my husbands career. The same week my mother passed away. That year our beloved cat passed away and my husband was laid off. I waited tables until he landed on his feet, and I never gave up writing, pitching and submitting. That year, some of my best work was published. We are a team and we keep going no matter the circumstances. Dreamers dream, life happens, but keep your dreams alive. It may be hard work but it’s worth it.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I was younger my appearance seemed to get more attention than my mind. Once I was told I was beauty and no brains, and a teacher once told me there’s more to life than a beauty pageant. I didn’t like those comments nor did I solicit them.
I had to learn I’m more beautiful on the inside, and through my writing I realized I was more than the girl with the great smile. I was wise, deep and I had something to share.
