We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rosario Chavez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rosario below.
Alright, Rosario thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I often think about what it would have been like to start my art career sooner, after graduating from The Art Institute of Dallas. However, I know that the timing is perfect now. I have had the opportunity to learn and gain experience in different fields and jobs, which has given me a unique perspective and a wealth of knowledge to draw on in my art.
My experiences in accounting, bookkeeping, and administration have taught me the importance of organization, time management, and attention to detail. These skills are essential for any artist who wants to be successful in the business world.
My experiences as a mother and wife have taught me the importance of creativity, patience, and resilience. These skills are essential for any artist who wants to be able to persevere through challenges and setbacks.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Rosario Chavez, an acrylic artist and the creator of Sylvia Rosario Arts. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where my love of art began at a young age. I would often doodle stick figures with dresses and flat heads, and I was always eager to explore my creativity in art class.
In high school, I received a full tuition scholarship to attend The Art Institute of Dallas, where I studied fashion illustration and design. I graduated with an Associates of Applied Arts degree and was awarded the Carolina Herrera Scholarship for Fashion Design.
After graduating, I moved back to South Texas to be closer to my family. I worked in accounting, bookkeeping, and administration for several years, but I never stopped creating art in my spare time.
In 2020, I decided to pursue my art career. I began painting acrylics, and I quickly found my niche in painting folklorico dresses from different Mexican states. I love the vibrant colors and traditional patterns of these dresses, and I find great joy in creating paintings that celebrate Mexican culture.
I am a passionate artist who loves to share my work with others. I believe that art has the power to connect people and to create a sense of community.
I am excited to continue my journey as an artist and to share my work with the world.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, I find the most rewarding aspect of my work to be the opportunity to share my passion for art with others. I love talking to people about art, whether it be at art events or gatherings. I am always eager to learn about different people’s perspectives on art, and I enjoy sharing my own insights and experiences.
When I do a commission, I take great care to understand the client’s vision. I ask about the subject matter, history, meaning, and how the person feels about who or what I will be painting. I want to create a painting that is not only visually appealing, but also meaningful to the client.
The most rewarding part of a commission is seeing the client’s joy when they see the final painting. I love knowing that I have captured their vision and that they are happy with the result. It is a great feeling to know that my art has made a positive impact on someone’s life.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am driven by the mission to share the beauty and richness of Mexican culture through my art. I believe that it is important for our younger generations to learn about their roots and to be proud of their heritage. My art is a way of preserving these traditions and making them accessible to a wider audience.
I often use my art to depict traditional Mexican folktales, dances, and festivals. I also enjoy painting portraits of Mexican people and landscapes. My goal is to create art that is both visually appealing and educational. I want people to see my art and learn something new about Mexican culture.
I believe that art is a powerful tool for communication and understanding. It can help us to connect with people from different cultures and to appreciate their unique perspectives.
