Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rosanty Garcia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Rosanty thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful is to be resilient in everything you do, no matter how small or big of a challenge faced, you have to keep going. I have endured many things in life that have felt like set backs, but one true thing that I know is that you have to roll with the punches, and face challenges head on to move through them. Nothing in life worth having comes easy, but that will make the end result that much more worthwhile.
Asking for help is also a big key to success, whether you work alone or in a team you always need help to get things done. Recently I was tasked with managing a small farm to table restaurant, and being my first people managing job I was a bit nervous about managing the many different aspects that it takes to run a team of people, and the customer service and people facing responsibilites that came with such a job. I knew that in order to be successful in this role I needed help from those around me. I asked for help in the areas I felt that I was lacking expertise, I asked questions to bridge the knowledge gap, I met with people with more experience when I had challenges come up that I had not encountered before. Most importantly I asked for help from those around me as needed, and made sure they knew I was always a person they could count on too.
Rosanty, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, my name is Rosanty Garcia and I live in Massachusetts with my husband, my 10 year old son and newborn daughter. I own Sabores mobile bar (a renovated horse trailer) and I am very excited to be here and tell you a little bit more about me. I was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the US (The Bronx, NY) with my mother and siblings at the young age of 10. Learning a new language, making new friends and adjusting to the culture and weather change were some of the biggest challenges I faced at such young age. These challenges though difficult also made me who I am, and opened my eyes to a new world in a new country. Ever since I can remember I have loved cooking and everything related to the kitchen, and hospitality. I vividly remember as a small child pretending to cook with all the nature elements around me and serving it to my friends who would pretend to eat it, or role playing as an entrepreneur with my friends where I would sell them something or come up with a business idea where I was the entrepreneur and they were my customers. My first business ever started with me baking for friends, and then enough friends, and family started asking for commission pieces that I would bake cakes, cupcakes and cookies for them. Although I enjoyed baking and making things for people and their families I quickly realized that baking wasn’t my true passion so I pivoted to something that felt more like me.
In the same year the pandemic hit I was laid off from my corporate job in healthcare due to restructuring (as were many other people) where I was employed for 11 years and I decided there was no better time to pivot and change careers than this opportunity that was given to me. After many hiccups and trying other ventures I decided to buy a horse trailer that a horse trainer was selling in Maine. One Saturday morning in late 2021 my husband and I took the plunge and drove a few hours to Maine to buy and pick up the horse trailer that will become our mobile bar. From that idea of the mobile bar came Sabores, Sabores means flavors in Spanish. with my brand name I wanted to honor my hispanic roots and culture, and my love for flavors both savory and sweet. For my customers I want to provide a unique bar experience of flavors, with simple syrups and mixers made naturally and with locally sourced ingredients made in house by me. There is something so special about cocktails made with fresh mixers, syrups and garnishes. These cocktails are the taste experiences that stay with you and make for your favorite stories and parties.
The thing I am most proud of so far in my business is that everything we have done so far in the trailer has been in house and with help from family and friends. We bought the trailer as an old horse trailer and have since stripped it, done welding on it, new metal has been added to it, as well as the floor and walls. We are more than half way done and will be up and running in the Spring of 2023. Currently we do offer bartending services with our satellite wood bar, and without, mixology classes and more, and we are very excited for next year and what is to come. I have always loved being behind the bar, crafting recipes and cocktails from scratch and serving people with cocktails and smiles, and I cannot wait to do that from our mobile horse trailer bar in 2023. My main goal is to provide a unique, tailored cocktail experience for every event and to make sure every guest enjoy every single aspect from the glassware to the garnish, and to remember Sabores for every drop of flavor we provide.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that I had to only focus on one thing at a time. One thing being one business, one idea, one opportunity or one job/role. As creative people we see the world differently and brighter and with this we may have many ideas at one time, some that may come into fruition and some that may not work out. Having many ideas is not a bad thing, it shows our mind sees the many possibilities that are out there and that our minds are always working in different directions. Yes, having focus when completing tasks is necessary to get things done, but we should always keep our minds open to all of the possibilities and ideas that may come because we don’t know where they may lead. Being an entrepreneur and a creative takes a lot of courage, trial and error and resiliency. Sometimes we may say no because we think we don’t match the qualifications, we don’t think we have the skills, or we think we may fall short from the expectations but say yes anyways, and open yourself up to try new things, say yes even when you don’t feel 100 percent ready or confident in yourself because you don’t know where that experience, lesson, or yes may lead.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My social media audience has grown organically with friends, family and customers that have made connections with along the way, As I created marketing promotions, classes and started to get the word out about my mobile bar I also created a few ads to target the audience that I want to market my business to, the audience who’s problem I would be solving and who is the ideal customer for my business. I think a big way for people in the hospitality business to grow and something that has worked for me is to establish relationships and connections with vendors (caterers, event designers, wedding planners, and others) and other people in the business who will not only connect you to their customers but also help you grow by sharing advice, lessons and tips about what they have learned along the way. Don’t be afraid to ask for a follow, a business card, to introduce yourself and make your presence known andto always show up as your authentic self. As much as social media is important in modern day business, nothing beats face to face interaction. I also use my personal network to share my business promotions and also use any chance I get to talk to people about my business, what we have going on and what we have happening for 2023.
Right now we are focusing on creating awareness for Sabores for 2023 and launching our mobile bar trailer in 2023. We are very excited for what Sabores will create in 2023 and beyond, and we cant wait to share it with you all.
