We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rosalyn Yoon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rosalyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When it fixed my boredom.
Rosalyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Rosalyn Yoon and I’m an artist currently working from LA. I started drawing to pass the time when I spent a lot of my youth in hospitals. My hobby for drawing gradually turned into something I could possibly get work in.
I initially started out with traditional painting but I slowly transitioned into illustration. Once I made enough work for a portfolio, I put it up online. I eventually started receiving requests for commissions or spot illustrations to accompany articles.
I still paint in my own time because illustration is primarily a job for me. New projects can be exciting but it can be frustrating when clients don’t explain what they want accurately. I feel a sense of pride when anyone reaches out about my work. Any intrigue for my art is welcome. Even if I don’t become a distinguished celebrated artist, my work is out there forever on the interweb. And I think most people fear feeling vulnerable and judged too much that we may never see these creations.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Sharing and purchasing art!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Maybe if I’m looking for one, a purpose for life.
