We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rosalia Moon Webster. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rosalia Moon below.
Rosalia Moon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I was born an Artist so there was a never a moment that I could undo what I am. In regards to do I ever wish I had a normal job absolutely not. When I was young I would sit admiring fantastical paintings of Artist Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo imagining I would becomethose women on molten cliffs holding Spears facing alien jaguarson Planets far far away beyond existence today I’m one of the artistic leaders standing up for humanity and prioritizing strengthening my community both near and globally I couldn’t do that if I had a normal job I am a wing walker I am thrilled and comforted knowing I have no idea what my future holds but it will be exceptional
I will have given every ounce of my creativity and with a smile on my face I will stand strong on the side of goodness and justice for this planet and humanity and that I can only do by being an Artist

Rosalia Moon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a storyteller I grew up on a mountain top without electricity chopping wood to build a fire
to warm the house
chopping wood
to heat water to bathe
chopping wood
to cook food
the rest of the world was in industrial revolution
and I lived 5 miles up a dirt road with only animals for friends coming from a lineage of artists papa a sculptor reflecting the exaltation of home
great grandmother a storyteller
personally tailoring tales to suit my fancy
great grandfather a woodcarver of characters carousels and clowns their own creativity gave me what I needed for my imagination to go into overdrive productivity
as though I were a fairytale workshop producing joy for all occasions
in that isolated loneliness of youth I reached into my own toybox for personal entertainment and to entertain those around me
by this point I was still only five
but I knew what old Hollywood meant and what tap shoes were I had a collection of hats and was already writing rhyming songs and illustrating costume and stage design
attending rural and tiny Pacific Valley Schoolhouse in the 90s gave me a lot of privileges
we each had our own computer -and trust me even the towns kids didn’t have that
we would go on city trips
theatre trips
ski trips
to ensure we knew how to engage with the world from our wilderness Utopia
it was the years of grant writing
our unified district had a abundance on the inside
and on the outside it was a true fairyland
we would learn Spanish on the beach
surfing for PE credits
and as much as we read we also wrote and created
for our vessels were full and our young minds healthy and inquisitive
I launched into the world at a early age supporting myself
living alone by age 15
by 20 i had opened a restaurant partnered in a gallery
my part being vintage clothing
we produced fashion shows and yard concerts right outside our collective
it was the early 2000s the world was our oyster by 2010 I turned into a performer because the more I produced the more I wanted to be on the stage telling my stories whether it was in costumes
juggling fire
balancing swords
tossing hats herding cats (for i now owned my own dance troupe)
or with a microphone in my hand
because that that was dearest to me
the poetry was coming to life the stories I was producing were now mixed media
I was a producer
fire dancer
costume designer
and I published my first
poetry book
Then there was a pandemic
and then there was injustice
here i was
with a solid foundation of artistry
because I was born this way
a creature of the earth dirt mud rock loam and nothing to lose
because I come
from forest stone sea
the wilderness
so i stand up
upon the foundation i have laid
no fear facing cruelty and abhorrent action the current world has foisted upon us
no hesitation in running to the vanguard with creativity
therefore in the last year I have used my art my platform as a superpower to provide emotional physical and mental alternatives to the ugliness the world can sometimes present
I do this through my performances which I call ritual performance or prayerformance
I do this through
Little SuRCuS mystery School a youth circus camp created by myself and Erin Carey a professional Circus Artist I have been working with for a decade
we work with kids from 5 to 18 we hold these programs throughout the year
Little SuRCuS is funded by the Big Sur community no child is turned away due to economic contribution
We teach group connectivity empowerment creativity and mentorship and circus!
BiG SuRCuS is my dance company and mixed media forum
named in 2000
however since I literally am BiG SuRCuS
and I turn 50 in 2026
I am now reestablishing my established date as 1976
I want the youth to believe that they can be anything
as an artist we can transform and create this is the magic of circus
look at me now I am still setting my sights on creative projects that I haven’t even downloaded yet
I want the elders to be able to relax and know that they are going to be OK and not have to take to the streets with worry
In that respect I am one of the organizers in Monterey that is responsible for our last 10,000 person rally against fascism
My art is truly the goodness that is seeping through my veins from a life spent being nurtured by nature
I haven’t found a way to bottle myself yet
so every aspect of my art carries my personal magic
poem is a spell
dance is an offering
drawing an invocation
requiems for those we lose
It seems as though my art is all over the place
But It isn’t
it is only one thing
a mantra
prayer
secret aum
vibration of positivity
sun-rey rainbow
my art is simply me
the woman who is born of this land
friend to the less fortunate
who didn’t know they were
elves of the creeks and shrubbery
rugged travelers minstrels to me
the young woman who watch a man balance a wheelbarrow upon him a chin and buck knives on his scarred ugly nose
she now lives in a treehouse
still gang gang with wildlife
skunk raccoon mountain lion Hawks whales hummingbirds slugs salamanders lizards
snakes woodrats bats spiders
My art is a mystical woman who is turning half a century
writing songs to conjure my mermaid wife
designing and building a circus destination near todos Santos Baja Mexico
i am writing another book of spells
holding circle and ceremony within my community
I am telling my story in real time to all of you
Hire me to conduct a prayerformance at your special affair
hire me to write you a personalized poem
hire me to teach you to Fire Dance come buy my book
come buy my magic
my herbal spells
my costumes adornments
my art is the essence of kindness indulging in my magic inspires one to smile even in battle
to sing even when grieving
to dance even when broken
reminding us
to love all elements
of our mama earth
love the planets the stars
the energy
that is the facia of existence
just as kindly as we will learn to love one another and ourselves
this is my art-

Art is the product of the goal
the goal is happiness and joy
I look out to this world and I think instead of wasting our time hurting each other and taking from each other and wanting more than one another
we could be talking about flowers and birds and how to build a beautiful celebration for the youth when they graduate
we can talk about projects and collaborations finding our way back to providing for everyone
Ideas for abundance and equality
honoring and remembering
for the elders when they have those landmark birthdays
I look out into the world and I think gosh how magical would this planet be if we transform energy used for negativity to positive use
I write morals into melodies
for people to hear
say yes
that feels good
sounds good
is good
I see food being thrown away
and I cringe
I see bathrooms bedrooms and kitchens being remodeled when they’re perfectly perfect and my stomach turns knowing that that Resource could feed babies
my messages of compassion dresses in delightfully wrapped packages of lovely lyrics
delicious to the ear
kindness is clear
and that resonates with everybody it’s like the fable of the wind and the sun they make a deal to get the guys travelers jacket off and the wind blows and blows and the guy just holds his jacket tighter and tighter in the windows force full in stormy and This traveler won’t let go of his jacket and then out comes the sun smiling and gently warms him and he takes off his coat
If we could find our way back to vulnerability and intimacy we could find our way to connectivity
and that is where peace and harmony exist
Art is a haven to gather around
it is like a bonfire for our souls gather here around to art
no judgment
we are all equal here in admiration of creation creativity
knowledge that is presented so lovingly so considerate that we all want to agree and say yes let’s live in harmonious humanity
