We recently connected with Rosalba Ramos and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rosalba , thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
Because my passion is driven toward a holistic lifestyle, I would love my legacy to be one that leaves people informed and aware of alternative ways of living. There is always going to be a better option out there for your skin and your body. We live in a high-tech society where there is an explosive amount of knowledge out there. We just need to look for it; be our own advocates for change.
My grandmother planted the holistic seed in me and it has blossomed into me being the best and healthiest version of myself and I would love to plant that seed toward others so we can all live a better and healthier life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
People may not know this but I have personally been into natural skincare a bit over 18 years now. My journey started when I became pregnant with my first child. This was when I started really paying attention to what was going on and in my body because I immediately felt that I needed to be the healthiest and best version of myself and for my growing baby. I have always been an avid reader so naturally my reading during this time was more geared toward a healthy pregnancy. After childbirth, I continued reading but the books I chose took on a more holistic approach. My eating habits changed. I was no longer using products for my skin and home that were heavy on toxins. I started becoming aware of how these foods and products affected by body and immediately felt the change in me. I also became aware that not many companies catered to a more natural, holistic consumer.
So I started doing my own research and found ways to make my own skincare products. These products were also very beneficial to my son that was dealing with some skin issues.
One homemade product lead to another homemade product which lead to another and as the years when by, I kept adding natural and homemade skincare to my personal collection. I’ve even dabbled into the world of natural makeup.
After many years of making and gifting my own homemade natural skincare, and with the encouragement of close friends and family, I decided to start my small business journey.
In my small business, I sell handcrafted soap, whipped body butter, facial and body oils, clay masks, body scrubs and am working on a few other formulations to add to the collection.
I am going into my third year as a Latina owned small business owner and am very proud of all that I have accomplished thus far.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Before Zola Skincare, the only two social media platforms I had were my personal Instagram and Facebook. Naturally, I used those two to grow an audience and inform people of my products. Once that was established, I decided to introduce Zola Skincare on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. My followers have grown naturally and organically through the years.
Finding your own social media presence can be frustrating and stressful. With algorithms always evolving, it can be tricky to follow certain ways of doing things to grow your audience. This is where I’m still learning but one thing social media has taught me is that views do not mean likes, likes do not mean follows and follows do not mean sales.
So don’t be hard on yourself if this is your struggle too.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
My finances where very limited when I decided I wanted to start Zola Skincare. It was during the holiday season and I started with a gift set of soap, body whip and scrub. I figured it would be an easy solution for customers that did not want to deal with boxes and ribbons and bows. So ready made gift sets was what I decided to create. Needless to say those sold out very quick and added capital to my business but still wasn’t enough to continue. I needed to buy more ingredients to make more products because, gratefully, the demand was there. I looked for a small investor that believed in me (thank you) and began producing more natural skincare goodness.
I don’t have the answers to building a great success story because I believe that everyone’s success story will be different and personal to their journey and where they are in life. But I do have the answers to building my own successful story and I will be doing that patiently while giving myself grace one day at a time.
