We were lucky to catch up with Rosa Vo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rosa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Earning a full-time income doing what you love is a dream that many of us share. However, turning that dream into a reality can be a daunting task. I am here to share my own story of how I achieved this goal by designing and doing pottery, and I hope it will inspire others to pursue their own passions and dreams.
When I first started out, I had a lot of doubts and fears. I wasn’t sure if I had what it took to succeed in a creative field (making art,) and I was worried that I would never be able to make a living doing what I loved. However, I knew that I couldn’t give up without even trying. So, I decided to start by accepting projects for free.
At first, I did not have any experience or portfolio to show to potential clients. So, I took on a few small projects for free to sharpen my skills and build up my connections. By doing this, I was able to gain some valuable experience and also start building up my portfolio. I was able to showcase my work to potential clients, and this helped me to land more paid projects.
As I gained more experience and built up my portfolio, I started to charge for my work. I made sure to set reasonable prices that reflected my level of experience and expertise. I also continued to take on new projects and learn new skills. By doing this, I was able to improve my craft and become more confident in my abilities.
Eventually, I was able to earn a full-time income doing the creative work that I loved. It wasn’t an easy journey, and there were definitely times when I felt like giving up. However, I persisted and kept trying, even when things seemed difficult or uncertain. It’s important to remember that success doesn’t come overnight – it takes time, effort, and persistence. It’s okay to start small and work your way up. By being persistent and willing to keep trying, you can achieve your goals and turn your dreams into a reality.
We should be willing to keep trying to do what they want instead of being afraid that their dream won’t come true. It cannot come true if you do nothing to make it happen. So, take a chance, take on small projects, sharpen your skills and build up your connections. With time and effort, you can turn your passion into a fulfilling and sustainable career.
Rosa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started out by offering my services to non-profit organizations, which allowed me to gain valuable experience and hone my craft. Through YouTube tutorials and online resources, I was able to learn the discipline and technical skills necessary to create high-quality graphics for printing and digital marketing.
Over time, I was able to build up my portfolio and start taking on paid projects. One of my biggest successes has been transforming the branding of Marte Company and the Kidwell Team website to reflect their trustworthy services. Both of these companies were struggling to communicate their value to potential customers, and I was able to help them create a brand identity that accurately represented their mission and vision.
At my company, we take pride in being meticulous about our creations. We understand the importance of delivering high-quality products and services, and we don’t cut corners when it comes to art and design. Marte Company, our company, only delivers products once we are completely satisfied with the art. This attention to detail and commitment to excellence has helped us to build a loyal customer base and establish ourselves as a trusted provider in the industry.
While our company may be small right now, we are passionate about what we do and are committed to growing and expanding our offerings. We believe that every project we take on is an opportunity to showcase our creativity and technical expertise, and we approach each one with the same level of dedication and enthusiasm. I am excited about the future of our company and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I just found out playbook.com recently, as artist and designer I always have no storage space on drive. But playbook gives us 4TB free shareable storage which is a lifesaver!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
We all have to get through the idea of being poor as art creators. I used to study nursing because of that… But I can’t stop doing art, so I push myself into it since I enjoy the process of making art too much. There are challenges in any kind of career, but I prefer dealing with creative industry challenges than others. I love what I am doing as well as the results of my hard work
