We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rory Romano a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rory thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
From a young age, I wanted to be a pop star! I liked dancing around while singing loudly and imagining I was on a stage performing to an audience. But I was encouraged to follow “safe” paths in life so I could “support myself”. And to do things that I could learn easily or already knew how to do. So, I kept this dream to myself and hid it away for many years. It wasn’t until I was 27, a newly divorced mother of two with no sense of direction, that I realized the only “safe” path was to support myself by following my heart. So I asked myself… “What do I actually want to do?”. I wanted to sing!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Aside from being a singer and songwriter, I work in the holistic wellness industry. This work has helped me claim my rightful place in the music industry and is how I help others realize their true calling. Let me explain…
We all go through life having experiences and these experiences cultivate emotion within us, emotion that needs to be expressed. If we exist in an environment where we don’t feel safe expressing ourselves fully and authentically, we keep those emotions stored within us. We still move through life collecting more experiences and more emotions but we’re not able to experience them at full capacity because we’re already filled with unexpressed feelings! We experience a dampened or depressed version of life. Furthermore, our body is holding onto these feelings for us meaning that it’s using more energy to move through life than it would take if we could just scream, or yell or cry OR… write a song. Art is a great way to express ourselves. But sometimes our body and mind is using so much energy just to get through the day while carrying around loads of unnecessarily unexpressed emotions, we don’t even have the mental capacity to think about creating art! Hence, the importance of emotional clearing. I did LOT’S of emotional clearing before I finally got to a place where I was able to admit to myself and to the outside world that I wanted to be a singer. I cleared years and years worth of emotions until I finally got back to that little girl who just wanted to sing. The next step was instilling the beliefs that I was worth the dedication it would take and that I was able to do it. So, I started rewiring my subconscious! We’re all programmed with a certain set of beliefs developed from the first seven years of life and 90% of the decisions we make are made based on these beliefs. For example, if you only received attention as a child while you were being punished then your subconscious might believe “attention is bad” so it won’t allow you to make decisions that will bring large amounts of outside attention. If you made it through childhood living under the poverty line, your mind is going to believe “being poor keeps me safe” because you made it out alive… and that’s what our subconscious does, it keeps us alive! And when it comes to growth, a lot of these beliefs will hold us back or prevent us from trying something new. We can rewire the neurological pathways our brains uses, I use a system called Psych-k. With emotional clearing and subconscious rewiring, I move through life with more ease and happiness than I ever have before and I’m finally following my dream! So my biggest message that I hope people take away from my story is that anyone can be an artist and support themselves by doing so! You might not know it, believe it or feel like it now but that’s just life trying to bog you down. If you put just a little effort into addressing emotions that want to be acknowledged and you commit yourself to becoming a new person by thinking like a new person, you can do anything.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely! My vision is to empower the masses through music. I think that building the life of my dreams while pursuing my passion as an independent artist is inspiring enough but I hope to be more of a leader someday. Maybe run a label or a mentor program, the vision isn’t always clear, I just know that I am on my path. As much as I enjoy working with clients one on one and watching them grow, it can be cost prohibitive. But now, I have the ability to share wisdom through something as accessible as a song. It’s pretty cool.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Mami Onami and her teachings on business, spirituality, sex, wealth and overall life development has been “wow!” I think a big block for a lot of creatives is money and she has taught me that creative people ARE business people. I’ve been shocked to hear many musicians I’ve worked with say things like “it’s really hard to make money as a musician” or “there’s not a lot money to be made”. WRONG! Mami will tell you, “People think that we believe what we see but really, we see what we believe”. She has helped me develop a business mindset while staying true to myself as an artist.
