We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Roosevelt D. Patterson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Roosevelt D., appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Starting the journey of sharing my life story in my book about some challenges and experiences. Being vulnerable and transparent has been a work in progress for me not knowing how my book would impact others. I realize that everyday is a risk in some format. So I started talking thing out with my wife to make my experience as a example how to overcome hard times in this life. Writing my story to share with you is taking a risk my hope is that my story will prevent someone from giving up on life. For anyone that may read my book titled Life Worth Living in Faith my hope is that they will see how to move forward in this life,
Roosevelt D., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Roosevelt D. Patterson. I am a husband to my wife, an author, and a businessman. For the last eighteen years, I was working for a trucking company before they closed. In 2006, me and my wife started Abundant Life Publications, a publishing company to help people put their writing into a book. I began by funding my wife’s work and traveling to book events. Then, I learned the details of writing a book from start to finish. I now understand that when a problem arises, it is an opportunity to teach me something I need to know. I like having the paperwork for all the details of the copyright information because if you miss this information, it’s going to be a problem for the client’s book. We work as a team to solve problems and deliver publishing solutions that make writers’ dreams come true.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
The story of meeting my business partner is that we met each other in 2000 on the job. For me, it was my business not to date any women that I worked with. Long story short, I saw her one day outside the job. I asked her how things were going, and she said I work for another company now. Then I told her that I would like to call her. Remember, I said I don’t date people I work with, but since she no longer worked on the job with me, she got my phone number. We started dating in February 2001 and got married in September 2002. We are still together, and we are building a life that we love as partners in purpose and partners in business.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I am experiencing a pivot right now in business, career, and life. After traveling the United States of America since September 2004, my day-to-day career changed abruptly in 2023. The company negotiations did not produce the best results for the employees, and I had to decide to focus on making my next move. Right now, I am working through the process of planning a better path for my future, which includes promoting the products that I have created. I am thinking more intentionally about investing in myself and pursuing my dreams and goals as it pertains to speaking, writing, and communicating about my journey in business. This journey has taught me that it is important to develop my writing skills and tell my own story in my own authentic voice. This pivot has also taught me to bet on myself and share the life lessons that I wrote about in my book. One chapter that specifically stands out in my mind as it relates to the pivot that I am experiencing is “Circumstance Proof.” That chapter is a reminder to believe in yourself in every difficult circumstance that you face in life. You are stronger than any circumstance you will ever face because you have the potential to pivot with purpose. I would encourage anyone who is an employee of a company to still find a way to establish and build their own dream while working for someone else. Your dream is important, and someone in the world will need the products and services that you offer. If a corporation that hired you as an employee changes their mind or makes decisions that could alter the course of your life, you can see it as a problem or as a pivot. I choose to see this time in my life, business, and career as an opportunity to pivot with purpose to fulfill my purpose.
