We were lucky to catch up with Roochita Chachra recently and have shared our conversation below.
Roochita, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Oh, I definitely wish I had started sooner! I’ve always been in the design world. After earning my B.F.A. in Commercial Art, I worked as a graphic designer for years. I even did a UX design immersive course but realized that wasn’t for me. It wasn’t until 2021 that I discovered Surface pattern design and everything just clicked. It felt like stepping into a whole new world of creativity where I could fully express myself.
There’s something so exciting about waking up every day to create work that truly lights you up. So yes, if I could go back, I’d tell my past self to take the leap into this world much earlier!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve worked in advertising, publishing, event management, and in-house design roles, but now I work for myself!
I create art both digitally and by hand, blending bold, modern compositions with vibrant colors and dynamic textures. My work follows forward-thinking trends. This year, I’m focusing more on illustrations and developing fabric collections for licensing in both exclusive and non-exclusive categories. You can find them on Minted, Spoonflower, Etsy, Walmart, and Amazon, as well as in licensed products.
My paintings are exhibited in Austin, Cedar Park, and Bee Cave galleries. One of my favorite and fun commissions was turning a surfboard into art! If you have a cool project idea, drop me a message. I’m always looking for new collaborations and creative adventures.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to create expressive, joyful, and uplifting designs that connect with people. As I continue to evolve, I want to see my designs in some of my favorite stores like Target and West Elm, as well as work on editorial and publishing projects.
And because I can’t seem to keep my hands off a canvas, I also continue to paint as a passion project. If you’re in Austin, come see my work at SXSW 2025, where I’ll be showcasing my art and designs!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Absolutely! The creative journey isn’t a straight path with clear steps or predictable outcomes, and that’s what makes it exciting. It’s about constantly pushing boundaries. Inspiration doesn’t just appear out of nowhere, and great ideas take time to evolve. Every artwork holds a piece of my heart, so it’s not just about making something pretty… it’s about storytelling and emotion. :) Whether it’s digital art or hand-painted, it’s the result of years of dedication and refining skills to make it look effortless!
