With 24 years of military service in logistics and engineering, including four deployments, I had a strong foundation in leadership, discipline, and problem-solving—skills that seamlessly transitioned into franchise ownership. My ability to analyze data, make informed decisions, and manage people through change positioned me to lead effectively and gain efficiency.

My strategic approach to business execution included:
Building the Infrastructure: I started with two 10×20 storage units and rented parking spots, later upgrading to an RV storage unit to consolidate operations.
I scaled from an initial two vehicles to five, with a long-term goal of owning seven to eight.
Hiring and Team Structure: I built a skilled team, adding an assistant manager, office management team, and part-time employees to streamline operations and increase scaling during peak season.
Marketing Investments: The decision to invest in digital marketing, direct mailers, and community engagement at home and garden shows helped drive customer awareness and revenue.

I’m Rontario S. Hicks, owner and General Manager of Pool Scouts of Huntsville. I am a graduate of Alcorn State University, the oldest land grant school in Mississippi. My journey into the pool service industry was not a traditional one—I spent 24 years in the military, serving in leadership roles at both organizational and strategic positions culminating with four deployments as a combat veteran. Throughout my formative years, I periodically performed work as a pool technician which was always fun for me. Through my time in the military, I honed my skills in strategic planning, discipline, and problem-solving, which became invaluable when I transitioned into business ownership. With the help of my entrepreneurial coach Stephen Manker we landed on Pool Scouts. After we met with the CEO and COO of Buzz Franchise Brands and the CEO of Pool Scouts I was sold. They believed in a family atmosphere and helping franchisees succeed.
Instead of starting from scratch, I chose to invest in a franchise model. I wanted a proven system, strong brand backing, and operational support—elements that would allow me to grow quickly and efficiently. What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Unlearning to Grow:
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn in my journey as a business owner was the idea that I needed to be involved in every detail to ensure success. Coming from a military background and having experience leading through high-stakes environments, I was used to being hands-on, making quick decisions, and ensuring things were done with precision.
However, in running Pool Scouts of Huntsville, I realized that true growth required me to trust my employees and empower them to take ownership of their roles. Initially, I found myself overly involved in daily operations—wanting to oversee every repair, every customer interaction, and every service call to protect the brand. But I quickly learned that this approach limited the scalability of my business.
What I Had to Unlearn
I don’t have to do everything myself. My role isn’t to be on every job site—it’s to build a system that runs efficiently without my constant oversight that has tools to ensure the customer experience is nothing stellar of 5 stars.
Trusting my employees leads to better results. When I gave my team the authority and confidence to make decisions, they stepped up in ways I didn’t anticipate.
My job is to work on the business, not in the business. By learning to delegate and build a leadership team, I’ve positioned the company for sustainable growth.
