We were lucky to catch up with Ronni Jay recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ronni, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
There has never been a time when I wished I started my creative career sooner. I was a month shy of my 39th birthday when decided to go ahead and go for it. When I was younger I was full of fear and had to learn to be bold and do what I truly want to do.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For many years people were telling I’m supposed to be a comedian. I didn’t take heed right away because I didn’t believe it. I got into comedy the same way any other comedian has which is by going to open mic and improving my writing and performance. I’m proud of myself for creating and hosting my first comedy show which sold out. I most definitely have to give credit to the poet and comics that I booked for that show. That was a phenomenal night.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I believe non-creatives struggle to understand is booking talent costs money. A lot of people want to book comedians cheap or free not understanding it’s so much that goes into this other than hopping onstage and telling jokes. It’s a lot of preparation that goes with this such as open mics, writing, tweaking material, creating an onstage image, etc.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In the beginning my goal was to get so good that I get booked for shows but now I’m going in another direction and creating/hosting my own shows as well. My goal is to go as far as I can with my craft and to eventually mentor anyone who’s willing to be mentored.
