We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ronald Summers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ronald , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The “God Can” EP project is significant because it came about when I felt stuck in my journey as a gospel artist. Honestly speaking, I felt my window had closed. During the COVID-19 lockdown, this project resurfaced reigniting my passion and inspired me to keep pursuing my artistic goals.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
To those discovering me for the first time, I hail from Detroit, Michigan, but my musical roots began in Indianapolis. It was in Indianapolis where I honed my writing styles and explored various vocal techniques, setting the stage for my journey to Houston, TX, and eventually to Baltimore, MD. One defining aspect of my personality is the harmonious fusion of introversion and extroversion. While many gospel artists lean towards introversion, my flexibility enables me to navigate between these traits, recognizing their respective importance.
Being adaptable to my surroundings allows me to absorb the musical styles of my environment and create music inspired by it. This adaptability is evident in my versatile songwriting. For instance, in Houston, where the music scene encompassed gospel, neo-soul, jazz, and more, my style was influenced by these genres. In contrast, Baltimore has its own unique sound and style, which is now reflected in my writing.
It is a great privilege to inspire fellow artists to explore music and to be selected by them for songwriting. Being chosen to have my songs featured in others’ albums and collections is truly a blessing.
I want both my potential fans and current supporters to understand that my music originates from a genuine source – my life experiences. I have transformed my toughest challenges, hard situations, and difficult times into beautiful music. Singing about them is possible because I have faced and conquered these obstacles in real life.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
From my perspective, I believe there is room to increase royalties to create a level playing field. It’s essential to compensate artists fairly based on current trends, such as streaming, and what they deserve.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to relearn is that not every door and opportunity that presents itself is meant for you, no matter what it may be. Whether as an artist or simply as a person, it’s important to prioritize how you are perceived and it’s acceptable to decline certain opportunities. For instance, during a past presidential term, I observed some artists’ careers shift as a result of their involvement in the inauguration. One bad decision changed the course of their future.
