We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ronald Solano. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ronald below.
Ronald, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of my most meaningful projects I have done recently was some client work for a band I recently worked with. They’re a latino band called “Floats” and they hired me to create some logos and some merchandise designs. It meant a lot to be able to work with them because I love being able to work with small bands and helping my own community. I have aways loved music and art, and getting to work in a field that brings those two together brings me a lot of joy.

Ronald, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So first off, hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. My name is Ronald Yeovane Solano Zamora and I am a queer latino graphic designer and artist from Newark, NJ. I have been a practicing artist since as long as I can remember. I attended the nations first public high school for the arts, also known as Arts High School in Newark NJ. My focus as an artist is influenced by a few communities, the Latine/Latinx community, the queer community, the music community, and the silly little guy community.
A lot of my current work has been inspired by or reference music, as music has always been such an integral part of my creative process. When I’m not working on music designs I am creating pieces about ways to preserve my Latine heritage and my queer identity. I am currently focused on trying to create more political work to speak about the issues that affect these communities. During my free time I also like to make funny t-shirt designs that are usually inspired by random thoughts or phrases that pop up in my head.
What sets me apart from others is that I have always tried to find ways to integrate my love for fine art in graphic design, I’m always experimenting and trying to find ways to involve more hand-rendered man-made textures and objects into the digitalized and flat world of graphic design. For my latest projects, I’m using a bunch of plastic tiny babies and type made out of liquid glue for t shirt designs.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One of my main goals as an artist is to create joy with my work. I want to create designs that resonate with people, inspire people, and educate people on trying to be more conscious of things like social dynamics. I also want to create artwork that entrances viewers and fill them with emotion, story, and help them feel something.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being inspired by such small things like the cadence of droplets dripping down a blade of grass on a rainy day, or the way the sunlight reflects off a window panel and reveals a just barely visible reflection of the greenery in the nearby fields. I feel like these small moments are scenes that artists/creatives are able to identify and resonate with more intensely because we are born with the ability to visualize and the desire to find inspiration.
