We were lucky to catch up with Ronald Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ronald thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
Things sort of just started serendipitously, I’ve always loved the unique nature of New Orleans, and I wanted to make some videos about the words that we say here, that people don’t always understand, and the street names that people couldn’t pronounce. From there I realized since the city is over 300 years old I could also focus on the history, from there I added on food, and just kept adding more things about the city. Eventually companies and corporations, started to want to work together, and by that point I knew I was on to something.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Aside from creating media content I also do freelance photography as well for over 10 years, which is just another great way to showcase the unique beauty of the city. But being that I do things more freelance the only real hurdles I have to overcome is just meeting people in the middle of my vision of the city and theirs. Sometimes people say that my content is too overly hopeful and cheery and doesn’t focus enough on the issues, others say I’m too negative, or that I don’t know enough to even speak on the city. But I’ve come to learn that people want to work with me because of my vision of the city, and I am proud of the things I’ve learned and shared about this city, as well as the ways that I’ve gotten to promote it. In any line of work they’re going to be people that don’t like what you do, but that doesn’t mean that you should stop, merely improve what you do, and get better everyday.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Honestly, and truly just a love for my city. Though I have to hear I don’t have an accent every single day of my life, and no, not everyone does like in the movies and tv, I still find this city to be so amazingly beautiful, welcoming, and full of truly kind creative people who inspire me everyday just walking down the street and taking it in.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Just being genuine and speaking from the heart as much as I can. The great thing about New Orleans is that the people, for better or worse, always speak from the heart, and I think that’s influenced me in the best way.
