We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ron “A.P.” Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ron “A.P.” below.
Ron “A.P.”, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Technically, I’ve been doing this since I was 18, so there isn’t the wish that I started this sooner, but I do wish I was more consistent at an earlier age. Sometimes I wonder if I would be further into my music career, or if I would be prominent in the industry. Yet, sometimes I wonder if it’s because of my experience and the things I have been through, maybe the time that I waited to become more consistent and focus on music was the right time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From an early age, I set out to become a multifaceted persona. I instinctively gravitated to the world of arts and performance; being a hip-hop artist, actor, writer, and photographer. I took a hiatus from music for a few years to serve in the US Military. After traveling the world, I felt that my true call of duty was getting back into music. I remember I was so lost trying to figure out what I needed to do to get back into music. I also even questioned if I was still able to create the way I did when I was younger. I took a trip to Medellin. Colombia just to get away and explore, but then I met a girl, who I wrote a song for. The writing and creating process was so simple and felt so natural. I knew it was the right thing to do. A year later I released that song, “Colombian Girlfriend”. That song is what got the attention of a few people in the industry. Since the release of that song, I have been able to provide numerous songs to TV Shows and movie trailers for sync licensing. A lot of artists don’t even get the chance to present their music in these specific environments.
Having these opportunities has made me proud of my music. There are always moments in the beginning that have us artists questioning our decision to go full throttle with this music. When I started receiving back gems from my production, it helped me understand that the work I do is not for nothing.
Music is a service. I provide a high-quality service that helps set the mood in people’s lives.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is the idea that you’re sharing an experience that people can relate to. I love when I get comments about songs from people I have never met, who say they can relate to the lyrics. It’s what drives me and creates my passion. If my songs can help motivate someone, make someone feel better, or make them feel understood, then I feel more accomplished.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
The one thing that I learned about being in the music industry is that there is always some resource that’s like the hidden gem, but it’s not really hard to discover. One resource that I wish I had access to was sample clearances. I didn’t know that this resource was actually available for smaller independent artists. There were a few opportunities that were presented to me after I released my first EP. I was unable to use some of my music with these opportunities because I didn’t have the clearance for the samples in my songs.
