We recently connected with Romie Perkins and have shared our conversation below.
Romie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope to leave a legacy that will leave my family, friends and others inspired to never give up on there dreams , no matter how hard it looks. I want to build a successful company that will create generational wealth, and security for my children, while creating more job opportunities for my community. After I am gone, I hope people remember me for my determination to help others be a better version of themselves inside and out. When others speak about me, hopefully they will say, that I was funny, a protector with a kind heart, a visionary that never gave up and someone that was sold out for God.
Romie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in New Orleans Louisiana , and became interested in the artistic side of makeup and skincare. I saw early on when my children were small that they suffered from eczema. So I used other natural skincare products that worked well, but became expensive with a family of five at the time. One day I was talking it over with my mother about how expensive it was to take care of our skin, so she said well why don’t you make your own soap. I laughed because I thought to my self how do you make soap. I started to research and test out the products, over and over. In the beginning it was horrible lol. The soaps were slimy and the body butter’s needed even more work, but I never gave up. The medications that were prescribed to us didn’t work so failure was not an option, I went back again with testing the natural soap, and body butters out on me and my children, until I discovered a formula that helps my clients on there skincare journey today. To further my knowledge and eduction on skincare , I enrolled and graduated from Elaine Sterling Institute with a professional license in Aesthetics in 2017. Being a skincare special is not only about just trying to find ways to look more beautiful but to promote healing as well. There was a client that reached out to me because she used our amazing all natural tea tree soap, with lavender body butter and said that it helped her so much with the itching from her eczema, she was able experience a great nights rest. On my journey It makes me so proud to see people happier and free, who use to be embarrassed by the appearance of there skin so much that they wore sleeves during the summertime. RO’s Body Natural was created to educate my clients on the importance on proper skincare.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing I had to unlearn, was to stop stressing my self trying to be perfect during the process of building my company. The road to success can be very bumpy and uncertain. One day you are up and one day you are down. I had to learn how to enjoy the good and the bad, to learn that to not put so much pressure on my self with such high expectations that If I didn’t reach my goals right away, it meant I was a failure. When you are new to business it is important to get a support system to help you stay focused on your goals, while making sure you breathe and allow yourself grace, because everything will work together in the end.
Have you ever had to pivot?
There was a time when I absolutely loved make up, and wanted to be a makeup artist. I thought about going to school to advanced my skills. My cousin and mother encourage me to think higher, that your skin is the canvas that makeup is applied on. If I could learn how to take care of it properly then my makeup would come out even more beautiful. This was another reason that fueled my desire from being a make up artists to a licensed esthetician.
