We were lucky to catch up with Romeo Kollie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Romeo, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Even-though all my work serves a great significance to me, I’d have to say that my first actual project titled “Endurance” could definitely be consider my most meaningful project. Adolescent emotions and confusion geared up my drive, I feel like I ascended in a sense. I endured a lot during my mid-late teenage years. Endurance is a summary & closure of that chapter in my journey.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am native to Liberia, but grew up in the United States all through my teens, up to present day. I lived my childhood in a third world country so my imagination was used as an escape normally. I started writing novels, movies and poetry at a young age. I started recording songs during my junior year in High school with a couple of my homies. It started out as a hobby but grew on me so I decided to use it for positive reasons. My music tends to shine light on people with similar paths as me; it gives people motivation, hope and paints a picture of a unique journey endured. I’m mostly proud of the parents God gave me; although we never had much their attitude and work ethic towards the hardships left a mark on me and built me for tough. I am who I am today partly because of some of the values they implemented in me. Recording music is therapeutic for me and I hope it is for my listeners as well, I try to inform and inspire.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I love to create because it’s therapeutic and an escape route for me. Personally I feel that my outlook and purpose early on should’ve been different. Although my love for music can’t be measured, I only got deeply involve to blow up and change mine and those around me lives. The goal stays the same but my genuine love for the art itself, overshadows.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
With everything being clout centered right now, it probably won’t make sense to a young artists that are fueled by social media validation, if they see that I have a catalog prior to my mainstream breakout. I once had such mentality but I had to realize the older I got, I needed a resume. I needed something that introduce me as an artist as time went by. That’s my individual perspective though, I’m not here to knock another artist ideology.
