We were lucky to catch up with Romeo Hernandez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Romeo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
For a very long time, I did wonder what life would be like on the other side. There’s no hate towards it but that lifestyle is not for me. One day when a good friend said to me “There’s no use for a Plan B if you know in your heart that you’re working diligently for your Plan A. Don’t set yourself up for failure… Set yourself up for success!”. From that day it’s been full throttle, pedal to the metal, all gas no breaks towards my dreams. The journey too has been my biggest gift I never knew I needed. It awakened my inner child and made me grow with every hardship and fallen circumstances. You learn that with out one you can’t have the other…with out downs you’ll never be able to feel your highs! I’m happy where I am and wouldn’t trade it to be anyone else
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The Misfit Project is a dream that slowly is becoming a reality. Romeo who uses his Platform for others has always struggled with mental illnesses and strives to make an environment where you know that not being okay is okay! Opening up so that others can know that speaking of your issues or letting go and being present is better then holding it in. Branding that extends to anyone no matter your race, your love, your anything anyone is welcomed to be part of this community that shows that even in the darkest moments your light will always shine thru.
When he’s on stage everything disappears dissolving into a world where your safe to be yourself. Just as the air flows so does the vibe and energy he sends out with every song that is played. Music started coming out late last year and as of right now getting love from all parts of the country and different parts of the globe. Romeo is still a work in progress just as anyone else should be. Focused less in making it right now, right at this second because its more to him then fame, or money. To him this world is slowly falling but together with love, and genuine interaction you can change the world one Misfit at a time. Organic growth is a beautiful thing and strong enough to move mountains.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, being on stage and playing is an escape or better yet a kind of therapy. The entire time letting go of past trauma and being present in the moment with others that may feel the same. Playing genres that move and groove with the moment and not one set is like the other. Nothing is planned and every set is constructed right when I press play. The most rewarding part is getting off stage and speaking to Misfits with feelings and emotions that I also felt while I was up there. Stating that the entire time they didn’t touch their phones, they were in the moment and felt a cleansing that they have never experienced. The whole motive for me being up there is to give Misfits like me a place to feel at home.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Being authentic and engage with the people that show you support is big. I thought for a long time that posting stories uplifting my Misfits didn’t really matter till I stopped. Slowly reassurance crept up with beautiful and genuine souls messaging and telling me that those videos made them smile and gave them reasons to go thru the day. A shock due to me being a very hard on myself but a habit I’m working hard to correct. You have to figure out what works best for you and when you do you’ll be able to maneuver your growth to what best suits you. Sometimes the best thing you can do is “Do It”. So if you wanna dj practice hard and get to it. If you want to do anything you have to try because when your old and gray would you rather say “damn, I wonder how my life would be if i did it”, or “wow we really did that… we really freaking did it”. You can do anything you set you heart to and you are perfect just the way you are. You got this!
