We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Romanshika Singh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Romanshika, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
I knew I wasn’t among the ones who knew what they were meant to do on this earth but I have always believed in figuring things out as I move ahead. This attitude has led me to innovate my career and that is the most innovative thing I have done so far. My journey hasn’t been linear and I have switched industries quite a few times. Whenever I try to enter a new industry, instead of thinking that I don’t have any experience in that industry, I always try to think about the transferable skills I can bring to the table and of course a fresh, outside industry perspective.
My professional journey began early, as I took on the role of an educator at the age of 15. I later explored the tourism and hospitality industry as a tour guide. I then experimented with the beauty industry and worked for The Body Shop. Exploring diverse fields, I dabbled in content creation, and project management, and even ventured into finance and accounting, despite it not aligning with my strengths. However, it was in the realm of media that I found my true fulfillment, engaging in anchoring, reporting, and broadcasting. Nothing brought me more joy than authentically sharing stories through the media.
I have realized that people start knowing for you what you market yourself as. I was once the event girl, then the fashion girl and now I am the media girl so I learned quickly that you control your narrative. I’ve embraced risks and failures fearlessly. I’d rather take a chance, experience setbacks, and learn firsthand than live with the regret of not trying.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Growing up, I was incredibly competitive. Excelling academically, and being the first in class, extended to a pursuit of being first in every aspect—be it elocution, sports, poetry, or any endeavor. However, this relentless pursuit of success led me down a path where my worth was solely defined by achievements rather than genuine passion and enjoyment. Unhappiness, jealousy, and sadness became constant companions as I viewed everyone as a competitor. Even my significant accomplishments failed to bring joy, as I continued comparing myself to others.
A pivotal moment arrived when I could no longer ignore the emotions of negativity, discontent, and unhappiness. Choosing to face them head-on, I embarked on a journey of self-reflection. Through dedicated efforts in therapy, reading, meditation, journaling, and introspection, I came to the profound understanding that my true competition is with myself. The ultimate aim is not to surpass others but to evolve into a better version of myself. Recognizing that each person is on a unique journey with distinct experiences, I realized that comparing my path to others who have walked different routes is inherently flawed.
There are still days when I feel like I haven’t achieved anything and everything seems futile, but I consistently remind myself that my only competition is me. In those moments, I draw strength from certain quotes that I keep in the back of my mind when negativity starts to seep in:
“If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Warren Buffet said, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it” and I couldn’t agree more. To me, building a reputation is deeply tied to being intentional in every action one takes.
In my journey, I find that reputation is constructed through seemingly small yet impactful gestures. Consistently showing up, expressing gratitude, embracing feedback, and engaging in actions without expecting anything in return—all contribute significantly. The nuances of checking in on people and diligent follow-ups play a substantial role. Through embodying traits like reliability, hard work, and a determined spirit consistently, one molds a reputation that not only stands strong but also opens doors to new opportunities.
