We were lucky to catch up with Roman Slappey recently and have shared our conversation below.

Roman, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?

Yes, I am happy as an artist/creative. I get to draw/animate for a living. Outside of my own work, I get to use my skills to help others bring their ideas to life. I’d never take this for granted. I dont think I’ve had the thought of working a regular job instead of doing something creative. I’ve had regular jobs in my life and I know what they require physically and mentally. I’ve definetley had the thought of having a part time job while working to pursue my creative career, because working as a creative has its ups and downs.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I am primarily a Character Designer with Illustrator and Animation experience. I’ve been drawing since I was in Elementary school. I’ve always been involved in art in some way. It was just a matter of finding out what medium I gravitated to the most. Mostly, I provide illustrations and character art for clients. Occasionally, someone wants a 2D animation or something for a comic book. My art style is very versatile, which helps me to give clients exactly what they are looking for.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?

Stop underpaying/taking advantage or artists. Pay artist what they’re worth. Stop assuming that just beacuse someone can draw, they can do all mediums of art. For example, stop assuming an animator can do graphic design and make you a logo or website. Finally, do not use AI for art. Real artist in anyt medium do not support the use of AI.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)

NFTs are a waste of time. Do not invest in them. They a becoming irrelavent as time goes on on.
