We were lucky to catch up with Roman Lane recently and have shared our conversation below.
Roman, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
My first creative risk was becoming a music video director in 2016. Coming from Louisville, there was a lot of momentum around Louisville artists like Bryson Tiller, Jack Harlow, Vory and Kellz. I saw an opportunity to “level up” the visuals of many performing artists at the time and from that time period, I was able to earn two Emmys, an ADDY and a Promax Gold award. Taking that momentum into 2020, I took another risk to move to Los Angeles during the pandemic and started learning music production. Thankful to mentors like “Pkal” and Mickey Shiloh/HRDRV – I was able to hyper focus on learning to write songs, produce and mix/master songs in Los Angeles, where I still work til this day. Had I never took that initial creative risk, I’m unsure I’d be here today chasing my next accomplishment – future Grammy award winner.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I received my initial start in entertainment directing music videos for various artists. I was always heavily influenced by music and being around artists in music studios and I knew I wanted to be a part of music in a much bigger capacity. Part of me moving to LA was due to a manager named “Pkal”(Mafiasoul Records) taking a a chance and giving me an opportunity to work for him in 2020. I turned in my two weeks at my last job and picked up and left. Now three years in LA after that opportunity, I continue to work in music by co-writing songs with various artists from all over the world. I chose what to learn and offer based on need. When I noticed artists needed producers, I learned to produce music. When I noticed no one was in the studio to record them, I began learning audio engineering. Creative labels like HRDRV was a big tool for me to use my skills and network horizontally here in LA. I always felt the thing that makes my brand different was my attention to detail and ability to keep bringing the best out of the people in work with. There’s no ego, it’s just a genuine desire to create the best work possible and that always elevated the work, along with taking feedback and using it to improve.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Currently my biggest goal is just to keep creating at a very high level. I’d love to be able to one day day, I’ve earned my “black belt” in creating great music with talented artists. I’m committed to that goal for at least the next ten years. After that time, hopefully my hard work will help me earn a Grammy award for the work I’ve contributed.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The biggest thing that helped was my work on music video directing. Executing music videos at a high level helped spread the quality of my work and gave me the confidence I needed to want to take a risk in producing music and switching industries. Because collaborators believed in my past work, I was able to use that momentum and earn opportunities to help me improve musically. One of the biggest platforms Incan recommend to any independent music artist is HRDRV. With the resources and mentors there, it made it much easier to navigate the music business and connect with other like minded creatives in music.
