Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roman Anthony. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Roman, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I first learned to do what I do by joining the church choir as a child. Then several school choirs leading me to theatre and musical theatre and now to actual movies. I think had I known then what I know now, I would have started working with an acting coach and vocal coach sooner. I think the most essential skills are discipline, studying your craft and being consistent. I would say finances were the biggest obstacle. Between university costs, living costs and doing all of this independently it wasn’t always easy to stay in classes. But even so I think one should learn as much independently- YouTube, books, google, online courses if possible.

Roman, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My business covers most things media and art related. I am an actor who sings and models from time to time. I’m also a licensed cosmetologist who work on sets of films and magazines. As an actor on set I like to carry the script of course, a book, snacks and water. Also, a scented candle and a bottle of hot sauce for craft services. Movies are amazing, behind the scenes are 12+ hour days and sometimes a lot of it is sitting and waiting. So we learn to preserve our energy for the scenes and to be occupied. Now when I’m behind the scenes as a stylist then my job is to not only ensure the looks and continuity is consistent, but, sometimes catering to the needs of the actors in my chair. I find it’s best to use heat protectors and great products on the actors hair that won’t cause too much buildup in the hair. What sets me apart is probably that I am one of few actors who have acted in four films that they were a hair stylist on. I think I’m most proud of that, that I have been blessed to be able to use two of my main talents to create art in front and outside of the camera. My brand is all about authenticity and creativity. I want people to meet me and to feel like they’ve known me for years and are able to communicate with me their needs. I hope my work speaks for itself. Like they say, “if you build it, they will come”.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Freedom of expression. I love being able to create something and putting it out there when I want, not waiting for someone to create an opportunity for me. I’ve learned to create my own opportunities and to be non-apologetic about my art. I’ve been in this industry since 2010 and as many closed doors or no’s I’ve gotten I probably shouldn’t be doing it. But it’s my love, my passion and with social media and streaming today I am able to share my work.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The chosen struggle. I think many non-artist don’t quite understand that rather than pursuing a career with better odds we choose a career that attacks our self-esteem and questions our talent and skill daily. We choose our inner most deepest passions and that comes with no safety nets. To provide insight I would say be patient with your artist friends and family. Support their talents like you do those of the huge stars we all love. The support from a single person means more than you could ever know.
