We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Romain Mayambi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Romain below.
Romain , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I were to e start over in photography, I would start by creating more meaningful project and push myself out of my comfort zone. It took me a while to get over that fear of working with studio lighting when I first started out. If I has gotten over that fear earlier on, I believe I would have grown quicker in that area.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Romain Mayambi, I am photographer based in Cincinnati Ohio. I am originally from the Congo but currently have been living in Cincinnati for about nine years.
I picked up my first camera during my freshman year of college at the University of Cincinnati. I was always inspired by what outfits people wore on campus, so my best friend Leo, a Senegalese filmmaker, and I began randomly walking up to students and strangers on the streets, asking if they would be interested in getting photographed.
For almost 5 years now, my primary focus has been on fashion and portrait photography. It has been such an incredible experience to be able to build my skill and better my craft throughout the years while also meeting and collaborating with so many other amazing creatives around Cincinnati.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to bring an idea to life and sharing that with the world is one of the most rewarding thing to me. I have had a few dreams that I later turned into photo shoot projects and I can’t honestly explain how much that blows my mind.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The ability to create whatever I want is one of my biggest drivers, I can wake up one day and decide to photograph rocks for the rest of my life and no one can’t tell me otherwise; it’s the freedom to express myself that keeps me going.
