We recently connected with Roma Osowo and have shared our conversation below.
Roma, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I left my career in marketing to become a full-time stay at home mom once my son was born.
After a few years of my children attending school, I felt strongly that I was supposed to homeschool them. So I did that for four years.
During this period of being a stay at home mom and then eventually being a homeschooling mom, I always felt that there was something within me that I wasn’t fulfilling, but I had no idea what that was.
My husband and I prayed consistently asking for direction with regard to my purpose and what else besides taking care of my children I should be doing.
These prayers were consistent for over 10 years. I also during that time tried many things that failed because they were not what I was called to do. In December 2016, one day my husband came home from work And suggested that I do something for myself because I was always focused on everyone else in the family. He suggested that I start painting again it was something that I did open till we got married but stopped once we move to the United States.
Within a few days I had bought some painting supplies and could not stop painting I had Put my love of art on the back burner for many years. About two weeks after I had started painting again, my husband came home and said to me that he’s 100% sure that this is what I’m supposed to do. I have no idea how to become an artist, or how to pursue the profession.
I started taking classes and practice as much as I could, and realize eventually I would have to take the leap to actually see the words that I am an artist. So I change my very private Instagram account to public and let my friends and family know that I would be pursuing this path.
Despite my fears of failure, not feeling qualified enough, prepared enough, connected enough, I started posting my work online and telling the story of who I was and what I wanted to do which was to evoke joy and to encourage, and inspire people through my work, which is deeply rooted in my faith.
Within five short years of taking that incredible risk of putting myself out there working hard to improve my work and being as consistent as I could be, my work has flourished and has been collected by people all over the world, as well as added to corporate collections. It can be found in several national stores including Homegoods and TJ Maxx. My work is represented by the Liz Lidgett gallery in Des Moines, Iowa and has been featured in several publications and magazines including Traditional Home Magazine.

Roma, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Roma Osowo, and I was born and raised in the British Virgin Islands. I moved to do United States when I was 16 years old. I painted often as a child has a hobby and would gift paintings to people As a way to thank them for some kindness they extended towards me.
I love to create abstract art that leaves some room for the viewer to insert their own thoughts, emotions and interpretations into the peace. My work is bold and colorful and my greatest desire is to evoke joy.
I create original pieces of art but also sell prints of my work because I believe that art should be accessible to everyone in every phase of life. I
What I love most about my work is that my pieces often tell a story and most times my collectors connect deeply with the pieces they take home which creates a great conversation starter for them once the piece is hung in their home.
I also love that I have remained true to myself and my beliefs and my friend represents that I do my best to honor God in my work and remind others of his love for them and who they are and whose they are.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I believe that my growth on social media has come mostly from:
Being consistent
Taking small breaks often to avoid burnout
Telling stories through my art
For someone just starting out, I would suggest staying authentic to who you are when deciding how you are going to show up on social media. Everything doesn’t work for everyone, so get comfortable trying new things that may fail. Take risks, and try to foster relationships with both potential clients and others who are supportive within your industry..

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best new source of clients for me has actually been word of mouth from those who follow my work or have purchases before which is a huge compliment.
I believe this is because I try my best to only put out into the world what I am absolutely proud of and I do not sell anything that I would not purchase myself. I also pride myself on giving really good customer service and my customers are often surprised that I am still very involved in responding to emails etc.
