We were lucky to catch up with Roland Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Roland, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
Most people believe investments are just monetary values, but they can also derive from actions associated with their time or friends. I see every hour I put into something as an investment. In the book “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell, he explains the “10,000-hour rule.” The rule states, in general, that if a person invests 10,000 hours into a skill, they are considered a “master” at it. I track my daily routines because of this. I edit all my videos for my social media, but at first struggled to mask, transition, clip, etc. After multiple hours of practice and failures, I have exceeded 2-3 thousand hours worth of editing, and it shows in my videos/pictures created. The best investment anyone can make is in themselves. As a content creator or author, paying for subscriptions like CapCut, Grammarly Pro, Linktree, and services that enhance your business is imperative. Most people believe self-investments are rewards like gifts, which means the money earned is wasted on a liability, and not an asset with a higher ROI.
Friendships are also a great investment. Most relationships should be seen as a form of ROI, so time is not wasted between individuals, and resentment does not grow. I may see someone I started a bond with and believe one day the investment will return down the road. Many advantageous people think someone should provide value immediately, but iI view it differently. Every interaction is a chance to increase that bond with someone who may return the time in a favor, word of mouth, money, or just any form of value. You are watering the seed when you do this. A farmer does not sow the seed the day it is planted, and friendships may not show their values the same day either. This mindset has allowed me to build bonds that reinvest in me due to my dedication to investing in them.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a former college/pro athlete who has transitioned my abilities into various avenues, including book writing, modeling, and content creation. Many former athletes go through an identity crisis due to losing the only thing they knew, but I wanted to escape and expand upon it. What started as people being amazed by my crazy workouts, and going viral with reels from the gym or my dogs, I knew I could reach many using content creation. Showing my followers and friends how many different avenues I put myself in due to being so adaptable inspires others to believe in themselves. Many people’s lives change in less than a year, and that’s my goal for those who follow along with my journey. I enjoy helping those who reach out because I remember where I was before I started.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn is believing people will support you just because. Being valuable is why anyone will associate with you. As hard as this is for many to see, valuable people get support far more than those who have not shown their value. It is human nature. A person sees a lower risk of their time being wasted when a proven individual asks for their time and attention. Wonder why your friends will repost a celebrity’s reel before your own? That’s just how the psychology of humans works, and many try to question it instead of understanding it. I find that strangers support me far more than immediate acquaintances due to the strangers meeting me at that version of myself. Prove to others, first, then allow them to support after. Herd Mentality

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I read a lot. I read even on topics I know I would disagree on. Learning and digesting what you learn allows you to think outside the box. Whoever someone wants to be like, say a content creator or celebrity, learn from them. See what they do and change a couple of things, because you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Most of them are willing to tell their audience exactly what to do to become as successful as they are, but many are too arrogant to listen.
