We recently connected with Rohini Chandra and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rohini thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Misunderstanding comes in some forms in relation to my experience.
Being misunderstood in general in a fast-paced and capitalistic society is possible especially if you’re authentic, independent, and all about loving individuality and your identity.
Another take on misunderstanding is related to our perception of the entertainment and/or creative field is that it’s very cliquey. You must think in a certain way to be accepted and fit in…. in which a certain kind of people can only thrive. This is true to a degree.
Fellow creatives, professional, or close ones sometimes want to tell who you are or how they see you. They mischaracterize you or typecast you with 1 or 2 labels that you so do not like in real life! You see yourself differently!
My thought is that misunderstanding is not helpful in the craft of acting. You may need to detach, put your real self aside, and put your feet in the shoes of a new character. In this case, I have learnt to know who I really am before I do that and then decide to become the vessel of empathy or understanding.
I’m not a fan of homogenization taking over in which everyone is okay with thinking the same. We can certainly agree, relate, and respect one another rather than expect one another to be on the same page about everything. That’s why I find myself collaborating and working with creatives who have different takes on an idea. Certainly a person different from you can bring something new out of you. At the same time, you must bring your true self to the table.
It’s all about balance!
Right now is a great time for representation and diversity and understanding is definitely needed. We don’t all see the world the same way because we have different life experiences, come from different “worlds” or environments, and interact with different crowds. However, the creative space allows different opinions to come together through understanding, relating to one another’s feelings/ emotions, and wanting to make a bigger vision come to life!. I’m catching and surfing the wave for this very cool trend!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is seeing the final project come to life. No matter what budget you’re on, any art or creation can have a brilliant spark and change someone’s day. It can bring light, humor, healing, and even open our eyes to a story that we never imagined being exposed to and understanding.
During dark times, I want to create something magical and brilliant. During light times, I look back at my creation and it makes me happy that I am able to share it with the world. I simply create and put the art out there with no expectation.
It’s sometimes tough for someone who does a 9-5 or who enjoys set goals and routine. In fact, I’d like to tell that person that I also have discipline, structure, and also deadlines in my schedule!
Creative entrepreneurs are very much on their feet. We’re active and love the action and feeling of being in a flow and vibe with the big picture in mind.. But it’s also important to take breaks in the schedule and be available to those around us.
Creatives are not outright different, better, or cooler than anyone. We just do our own thing!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I need to unlearn is thinking that my creative skills come for free and are purely collaborative. Artists are taken for granted. There’s this automatic assumption and image that comes to us stereotypically – the artist who is aloof and doing street art for no price or cost attached. I say – ABSOLUTELY NOT ! Artists are known to learn and invest in their skills on another level.
Artists deserve to be paid for their hard work, discipline, dedication/ perseverance, and original talent and brilliance. We do something for society that comes from the heart and is so intent on making a difference sometimes. A degree or paycheck cannot teach you this eclectic passion.
My creative spirit sometimes needs to be tamed! Ideas are always flowing! And I have to remind myself that creativity is fun, but it’s also a serious business. Art should be made with passion, the love for the craft, without expectation for reward but also NOT for free.
