We were lucky to catch up with Roger Howard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Roger, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
I really like to reward loyalty in my customers. So when someone buys more than a few things I try to send them home with a little something else. I originally started doing this because I just wanted to say thanks but I also find that it sometimes leads them to buying more because they are exposed to something else I make. I know my customers find this to be a nice treat.

Roger, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a stay at home dad of 3 amazing tiny bipeds. I started What I Made Design in 2020 as a way to share my ideas and designs, and collaborate with customers customers to push my creative and artistic limits. I started with a one 3d printer, and a couple of resin molds. Two years later I have expanded to fill my home office with, four printers, resin station and a laser engraver that have opened up a whole new world of fun ideas.

How’d you meet your business partner?
My amazing, smart, beautiful, and outgoing business partner and I met the first week in college. She lived three floors below me in the dorm. It was an instant connection and we have been together ever since. She helps with my ideas, she helps me assemble product for sale, she comes up with new items that she thinks we should carry and helps to promote the business to anyone who will listen. She is endlessly supportive and the great love of my life.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I try to post on social media at least a few times a week so that I can remind my audience that I am still there. I take pictures of all my new ideas and post them so people can see what new items are coming. I even post my fails once in a while so people feel more connected to me and the process I go through to make new ideas come to fruition.
