Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roger Gottula. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Roger, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
The Coffee industry has for the last 100years has produced dark coffees that taste burnt and bitter. Consumer just know it that way and you will hear them refer to it as truck stop coffee.
The truth is that coffee beans have so much to offer in their flavor profile but it is burned out of them.
We use a patent pending roasting technology the products the most smooth, not bitter or burnt taste.
Everyone and I mean everyone who has tasted our coffee come back to us and says the coffee is so smooth and not burnt.
What this is doing is changing the way people think about coffee. It is a large industry backed by large companies.
It is a volume business but 60% of American drink coffee on any day.
Or mission is simple get our coffee in the hands of those that really appreciate good coffee and make them smile. Coffee can provide comfort.
I want people to remember sitting down with mom and dad and having coffee cake like I did.
What my father remembers most about his grandfather was sitting down with him on Sunday morning having coffee can. This was back around 1927. It still can happen today.
Roger, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I myself am what I call a Boomer Entrepreneur. There are so many baby boomers that still have many many years to live. Hopefully they will hear how another boomer who has tried entrepreneurial ventures all his life is going after it.
How I got into coffee was by chance. An old friend of mine who I had not talked to in 4 years called me to see how I was doing. Just his gut telling him to call me. After we caught up I asked him what he was doing. He said roasting coffee. My brain was less than excited. He said he was in Canada for awhile, they love coffee and tasted it. Then being an engineer said I am going to design and build a roaster. That is all I can say about the patent pending roaster.
He went on to said it’s the best tasting coffee in the world. Again another one of my ok really.
He said you have to taste it. Some time later I met up with him and tasted it.
My first thought was this is unbelievable. I had a love hate relationship with coffee but could never really find the perfect one. This was it.
I started rambling on how to market it. Having done marketing for the last 20 years I went off on the best way. He said he hates marketing and with that Tasty Coffee was born.
Off the hundred venture I have tried over the last 40 years I can say this make me feel so good.
I do not feel like the snake oil sales person. I someone says they will take me up on my taste guarantee and live in Colorado I will drive to there house. Pick up what they purchased and gladly refund them.
You have to believe in your service or product that much. It is and incredible feeling.
I really think I am most proud that I can put a smile on peoples faces and not even be there in person.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
This answer is from the other page I had it mixed in. How I got into coffee was by chance. An old friend of mine who I had not talked to in 4 years called me to see how I was doing. We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I have two mental battles with business that I fight every day. As example I always compare to what my competitors their marketing their cost.
I will spend so much time research that I circle back around and see myself from behind.
I do not know if it is wanting to be perfect or what.
People may say unlearn or forget it but it is like the dog chasing cars. Just got to get that car tire.
The nice thing about coffee is that I believe in my product so much that the I do not care any more.
My price is my price my coffee is my coffee and it is good. (Martha Stewart)
The second mental battle is consumer experience and story.
I have played checkers on my website so many time to get what I think is right.
I want is so perfect everyone buys.
Conscious I know that will not happen.
To help me unlearn I am just getting the name out their and will win by being noticed.
