We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Roger Eschbacher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Roger, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
Rarely. Freelance writing and theatrical/commercial acting necessitates that I’m always available to pitch and audition. I’m hesitant to go on anything longer than a weekend getaway because I don’t want to miss out on opportunities. Lots of last minute stuff happens in entertainment.
Roger, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As an entertainment creative, I’m most proud of my longevity in an industry that is always ready to show you the door. Part of the reason I’m able to do this is because I pursue success in several arenas.
I’m in demand as a writer for gigs on well-known animated properties, and I’m a short-list, go-to guy for a number of showrunners around town. I have the reputation for delivering high quality scripts on a deadline.
My comedy background as a main company alumnus of the Groundlings works for me both as a writer and, of course, as an actor. I’m an expert improvisor, and this skill has served me well in pitch meetings, presentations, and on-camera. I know for a fact that I booked many of my acting gigs, especially commercials, by offering script appropriate improvised additions (tag lines, etc.). Performing improv in front of a live audience has given me the strong secondary skill of being able to read a room. A helpful skill in any context.
Finally, I’ve been able to turn my passion for writing sci-fi and fantasy young adult novels into a gratifying and successful “side hustle” that I hope to transform into a full-blown career My YA space opera, Ghost Star, is a winner of the Kindle Scout competition and received a publishing contract from Amazon’s Kindle Press imprint. If you’re looking for fun SF/F reads, you can check out Ghost Star and my other books on my Amazon Author Page. SIDE NOTE: I also wouldn’t mind if one or more of my books became animated series. Just sayin’.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice
I’m fascinated by the concept of NFTs and have recently begun looking into what it takes to be successful in this arena.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
My “business” wouldn’t exist without multiple and supplementary revenue streams! Can’t (literally) afford to be idle in the entertainment industry.
