We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Roey Qiu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Roey below.
Roey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The first time I earned revenue from my creative work was through a commission from Julian. He discovered my work at my graduate show, where he collected my name card and later explored my portfolio on my website. Julian reached out shortly after, sharing how much he loved my work and how it deeply resonated with him. He commissioned a series of my work, which was incredibly exciting.
Knowing that someone not only appreciated my art but also saw the value in an entire series was deeply affirming. It wasn’t just about earning money—it was about knowing that my vision could inspire and connect with others on a larger scale. That commission marked a pivotal moment, turning my passion into a sustainable and impactful career. It truly felt like the start of something extraordinary.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Roey Qiu, and I’m a fine art photographer with a passion for exploring themes that challenge societal norms and celebrate underrepresented voices, particularly within the Asian queer community. My journey into photography began as a way to express emotions and stories that words could never quite capture. Over time, it became a powerful medium to create art that resonates with people on a deeply personal level.
I specialize in creating thought-provoking series that blend conceptual depth with stunning visuals. My work often incorporates elements of my cultural heritage, identity, and philosophical influences such as the Yi Jing (I Ching), offering audiences a unique lens to explore the world. I also extend my craft through commissioned projects, where I collaborate with clients to bring their vision to life while infusing it with my distinct artistic approach.
What sets me apart is my ability to intertwine complex narratives with visually compelling imagery. I don’t just create photographs; I tell stories that inspire reflection and dialogue. My clients and followers value the emotional depth and authenticity in my work, which often addresses topics that are both personal and universal.
I’m most proud of being able to represent my community in the artistic world, showing that our stories and perspectives matter. Whether it’s through my photography, teaching roles, or collaborations, I strive to leave an impact that fosters understanding and inclusivity.
For anyone engaging with my brand or work, I want them to know that my art is about connection and discovery. It’s for those who seek beauty in the unconventional and are curious to explore new perspectives. My work aims to make you think, feel, and see the world in a way you never have before.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to create work that resonates with others on a deep and personal level. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about taking abstract ideas, emotions, or experiences and transforming them into visual narratives that connect with people in ways words often cannot.
It’s especially rewarding when viewers share how my work has impacted them—whether it’s sparking a new perspective, evoking a powerful memory, or simply making them feel seen. As someone who represents an underrepresented community, knowing that my art can inspire dialogue, foster understanding, and give voice to stories that often go unheard is profoundly meaningful.
Additionally, the creative process itself is deeply gratifying. The exploration, experimentation, and eventual realization of an idea bring a sense of joy and purpose that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Being able to merge passion with profession, and knowing that what I create has the potential to touch lives, is what keeps me inspired every day.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I’m not a big fan of NFTs. To me, artwork is about creating emotional connections with people—sparking a feeling, telling a story, or evoking a sense of wonder. This connection often comes from experiencing the art in a tangible or meaningful way, whether it’s standing in front of a photograph in a gallery, holding a handcrafted piece, or engaging with the story behind the work.
While I understand the opportunities NFTs provide for artists in terms of accessibility and ownership, I feel they lack the depth and authenticity of a true connection. The digital nature of NFTs doesn’t allow for the same sense of touch or real-world interaction that I believe is essential for meaningful art experiences.
