We were lucky to catch up with Rodrigo Ramos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rodrigo , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
From my earliest memories, music has been an integral part of my upbringing. Raised in a household where church hymns and harmonies filled the air, it seemed as though melody was woven into the very fabric of our lives. With both my parents and siblings sharing a love for song, it’s no surprise that I, too, felt its pull from a young age.
Despite our shared musicality, there was always a longing within me to explore a different avenue of expression – the violin. However, growing up in a small city in Rio de Janeiro, opportunities for violin lessons were scarce. It wasn’t until later in my teenage years, when circumstances led me to a new city, that my dream began to take shape.
I vividly recall my family recounting a childhood memory of mine, where instead of strumming a plastic guitar like most children would, I would instinctively hold it against my neck as though it were a violin. Looking back, it seems almost predestined that my path would lead me to the instrument of my dreams.
The journey from that playful childhood moment to the realization of my passion has been one filled with serendipity and determination. Despite the initial lack of resources, I eventually found myself enrolled in a violin school, where I could finally nurture my musical aspirations.
Reflecting on these experiences, it’s clear to me that music isn’t just a hobby or a pastime – it’s a fundamental part of who I am. Each note played on the violin feels like a continuation of a lifelong journey, guided by the melodies that have resonated within me since childhood. And as I continue to hone my craft, I’m reminded of the power of perseverance and the beauty of following one’s dreams.
Rodrigo , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Let me share with you the profound significance of receiving support, putting in the hard work, and staying true to oneself throughout my journey. Hailing from the streets of Magé, Rio de Janeiro, life wasn’t easy growing up. However, at the age of 15, I stumbled upon a violin class at a church’s social project, and that great encounter changed everything.
Despite financial constraints, I managed to attend those classes, thanks to the unwavering support of my teachers who didn’t let me stop because of my financial issues. Their guidance and encouragement were instrumental in shaping my musical abilities and instilling in me the importance of perseverance.
Being the first in my family to pursue higher education is a badge of honor I wear with immense pride. It’s a testament to the power of hard work and dedication. Through relentless studying and a commitment to excellence, I was able to excel academically, ultimately earning a degree in music education.
Teaching in Rio’s social projects was a deeply gratifying experience, reminding me of the importance of giving back to the community that raised me. It was during this time that I realized the transformative impact of honesty and integrity in all aspects of life.
The camaraderie and sense of belonging I found with the Camerata Laranjeiras further reinforced the importance of staying true to oneself. Touring Norway with this talented group of musicians was a dream come true, serving as a testament to the endless possibilities that await those who remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence.
Now, as I prepare to graduate with a master’s in violin performance from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, I am reminded of the profound impact of being helped, studying diligently, and staying true to one’s principles. These values have not only shaped my journey but have also served as guiding lights illuminating the path to success.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most gratifying aspect of being an artist or creative is the profound ability to express yourself and narrate stories through music. It’s a transcendent language that bridges cultures, emotions, and experiences.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can best support artists and creatives by providing financial aid, promoting accessible education, and creating spaces for expression. Encouraging diversity and inclusion within the creative community fosters innovation and representation. Respect and fair compensation for artists’ work are crucial. Additionally, fostering collaboration and networking opportunities cultivates new ideas and partnerships. By implementing these measures, society can create a supportive environment where artists thrive, contributing to a vibrant creative ecosystem.
