We recently connected with Rodolfo Santamarina and have shared our conversation below.
Rodolfo, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I started dancing when I was in high school. When I was around 14/15 years old, and I started learning salsa. During that process I realized I wanted to learn more about dance so thanks to one of my friend in that group I began taking jazz and ballet. After those years I knew that my “hobby” wasn’t just a hobby it was actually creating the first steps in that my artistic path.
Rodolfo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I came from Argentina, I started dancing when I was around 14 years old. I began dancing kind for “accident”. Every time I had birthday party in my family or celebration, music showed up and dancing was always there. Nobody at home did it professionally but I knew I wanted to learn a little more. At the time my mom used to play tennis, and she got injured. So she went to the doctor and talking with his secretary, she told her that I could take salsa classes close to my house. I went there and that was how I started dancing. After that, jazz and ballet came, I graduated as a Jazz Teacher and as a Contemporary Performer, and then I entered to the National University of Arts. After working many years in my country, doing theater, tv, movies, working for Disney, cruises companies; I decided to take a step further and move to the U.S. to follow my dream and be on Broadway.
I have performed in regionals theaters in productions of Cabaret, Joseph, Fame, In The Heights and in 2022 I joined the cast of the Second National tour of Broadway’s On Your Feet.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As I said before, getting into the Broadway main scene is the goal. And of course it’s not an easy task. It depends of many things. After all I think that if you trust in what you can do, work hard in your art, are professional and respectful, doors would open and suddenly you’re gonna be doing something you never expected.
In 2022 I made an audition for the Broadway tour of the show On Your Feet and a couple of months later I was in rehearsal working with an amazing team, being swing and dance captain.
Keep working hard and calm is the key, in my opinion.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being on stage and connecting with people for sure. The theater has some magic that’s different from other ways of art. Knowing that a person in the audience is there waiting for you to tell them a story is really rewarding. The connection you create with the people is so powerful, I can apply the famous phrase we say at home: “Here and Now”, which I understand as live the present and be present.
