We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rodney Woods. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rodney below.
Hi Rodney, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Wow! Learning my craft started at the age of two. I would always dance in front of the tv and imitate and learn choreography from Michael Jackson Janet Jackson. I learned a lot of choreography from just watching videos from my favorite artists. I started taking ballet and hip hop classes when I was 16. Growing up I would always ask myself “why my parents did not take the initiative to put me in classes sooner?”,when they realized my love for dance. As a child I was so unaware that I could make a living from dancing. My parents saw my love and passion for dance however they would advocate more of me to go to school, finish school and gain a degree. Confidence and self belief were the most essential skills I’ve gained while on my dance journey. I truly believe life is what you make it, obstacles only get in your way if you allow them to. Gaining self confidence and believing in self will make you feel like you can achieve and accomplish anything.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name I is Rodney Woods. I’m a dancer choreographer from Memphis, TN. I’ve been dancing since I could walk. I got my start in the industry with the help of one of my favorite people in the world Jessica Ray. She really gave me that push and start to do what I’m doing now. We have created several significant performances and amazing videos. I love working with Jessica Ray. She is a an amazing and talented artist. She was the first artist who truly gave me a chance with showcasing and trusting my choreography. I truly thank her for that. She has really helped mold and shaped the choreographer I’am today. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t compete with any one but self and the person that I was the day before. I’am my own brand. I provide choreography and dancing services. One thing I’m most proud of thus far would be my relocation to Nashville, TN and the many dancing and acting jobs/opportunities I’ve received here. I’ve starred in several movies since I’ve relocated. The most recent one is “It’s Christmas Again”. Which premiers in theaters November 29, 2022! I also just finished a training and showcase with The amazing Mitchell Kelly. An amazing choreographer and dancer who really has helped me along this journey as well. One thing I would love for the people to know is that nothing works without hard work and dedication. I’m still working and dedicated to my craft with all that I do.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One particular goal and mission that’s drives me to continue journey is to perform on a sold out world tour with one of the hardest working entertainers in the industry, Beyoncé. I see and hear a lot about her work ethic and it really inspires me everyday to push harder and to go harder. The amount of hard work and dedication she has for what she does is just inspiring to me. Anyone who knows me knows this!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was that everything in life comes easy. Any and everything you want in life you have to work for it. Growing up my mom made me feel as though this world was mine. She was my number one supporter in everything that I would do and would make sure anything that I needed she would make it possible for me to have . After her passing my perspective changed and life started to hit a little different. I pray everyday that I’m making her proud.
