Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rodney Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rodney, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
It’s suprising surprising to many of our clients when they learn the business is actually named with my children in mind. I have an Elijah and a Jaedyn which is why Edje has a unique twist with a J rather than the traditional G spelling. I felt that was the perfect way to tie in a phrase that fit the business but also by incorporating family within it. I felt that my children knowing a business is named after them will give them inspiration to follow their dreams.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
This came about back when I was barbering. I’d have clients that were suffering from hair loss and I always thought there has to be a more convenient permanent solution than fibers, hair pieces, and hair transplants etc. When I learned about SMP I had a eureka moment and instantly knew it was my calling. I researched a very reputable company to train with and the rest was history. I spent countless hours practicing when I first began before I got really comfortable. I always saw the amazing results of the popular artists that came before me and it always challenged me to be better.
This craft is thought to be new to the beauty industry but is actually almost 20 years old as it started over in Europe and has become popular in the U.S. in recent years. A lot of people ask if its the same as a traditonal traditional tattoo and though similar as far as following the same safety guidelines, SMP is vey very different in the tools used and application. For example, we use very fine thin needles to replicate hair follicles that blend in with the existing hair. We also utilize a wide color selection of natural pigments that stay true to color so clients don’t have to worry about their treatment changing color over time. We can customize any hair line type so it helps clients researching to understand that any person can take advantage of SMP to create a tailored look at Edje.
When it comes to what we do I am and will always be most proud of how we get to help people feel great about themselves daily. I wouldn’t trade that feeling for anything.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Being one of the pioneers of this service in Colorado Springs was definitely tough. When I tell people I tattoo heads for a living they still look completely confused so imagine offering it as a service to an entire community that’s never heard it? heard of it? That instilled a great deal of resiliency in me as I knew many people would greatly benefit from Scalp Micropigmentation however, there would be a great amount of educating the public that needed to be done first. As I struggled gaining new clients my first year I started being intentional about how I represented my brand. I created my website with key educational information in mind so anyone could read through it and understand the process while also networking with fellow businesses that provided similar services such as barbers, hairstylist, hair stylist and estheticians to educate them on the beneifts benefits as well. That planted the initial seed for my business to grow within the community.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I feel the most effiective effective strategy to grow in any business is to over-provide value. Any time I’m interacting with potential clients I’m always anwsering answering questions, always demonstrating, and mentioning concerns that the person may not have even thought of yet simply because they will value that interaction long after that conversation. I always provide value before discussing price because I want my potential clients to be fully equipped with the proper knowledge to make a good informed decision based on value not price. Giving good useable information creates a form of trust between clients and we value those relationships very much. That in term spreads when people have conversations with others which leads to a growing clientele based upon integrity.
