We recently connected with Rodney Perry and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rodney, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission statement for my company is ” Life as King is committed to being the glue for creatives and small businesses to enable business communications and sustainable processes, through simple centralized execution. My business was birthed in the pandemic as a remedy to the issue of small businesses being able to retain their businesses in the virtual marketplace. I noticed that many of these mom-and-pop businesses many minority-owned didn’t have the competency to create an infrastructure to keep their business in profitable flow. All of my clients there is an emphasis on self-sufficiency I want to teach them the simple things they can manage and allow me to manage everything that may be high level in their digital marketing needs.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always loved language and communication before I even deeply studied the methodology. I was born and raised in Jackson, TN, the birthplace of famed poet Gil Scott-Heron. I believe that I am certainly a fruit from his creative lineage of creatives using their voice to speak to the world in a few ways. I studied marketing at Clark Atlanta University, graduating in 2015 and then officially moving to Chicago, IL. I like to believe my time in the midwestern metropolitan was a true proving ground for me as a creative professional and a balanced adult. I worked in several industries really for the sake of practicality, the outlet that kept me sane was my podcast. I started Simply King podcast in 2015 and have over 200 episodes over 90 guest interviews and I’m still publishing episodes that are fun, informative and engaging with my audience. The pandemic inspired me to not sit on my laurels so I started my company Life as King, it is a digital marketing and creative production company with a mission to assist small businesses improve their digital presence and reach their unique business objectives. I have worked with solo entrepreneurs create a marketing plan for the launch of their business serving as a creative project manager. I also have provided services to produce social media content for a fitness trainer who needed a complete brand refresh. I am able to consult in the range of things that include logo design, web design, social media content, podcast production and product photography. I want my potential client to understand that I am here to enrich and empower your brand and business by giving you tools to become more self-sufficient in areas and allow me to handle the bigger-picture projects.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
This isn’t quite a story but an era almost in my life. When I started my podcast in 2015, it was still a very unknown creative outlet for many African Americans, so I had to deal with the hurdle of not only convincing people to listen to me but also educating them on what a podcast was in the first place. The earliest of years I didn’t know if I was just publishing into the void, but through consistency and staying grounded in why I started the podcast in the first place. The tagline of my podcast is ” the soulfully conscious podcast for humans simply being humans”, I know now how much of a sociological foundation I created and it has still remained as my north star, in my eighth year of the podcast.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is the power of manifestation, to know that you can have an intangible idea that lives in your head which physically is a place but philosophically still up for question. The rewarding elements include coming up with a feel-good movie or poem, bringing that idea to reality then everyone who observes agree that your piece did in fact create good feelings. its the best validation for our imagination that’s the most rewarding.
