Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roda Colo Colo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Roda Colo, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
I treat my customers the way I would like to be treated. I show kindness by giving them discounts or a free pair of earrings, and I talk to them and tell them my story.
Years later, they progressed from being my customers and became my friends. One friend knew I was going back to the Philippines with family, so she surprised me with quilted blankets for my three daughters during my market. Another customer friend, when she saw me at the market the next day, she gave me a handmade ring made by her mother. In addition, random customers/friends will stop by my booth and give me free cookies or goods. It makes me happy because they also value me as their friend.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a mother of three girls ages 3 and 5, a TAMUCC graduate student studying Special Education, a wife, and a small business owner.
During quarantine in November 2020, I began making polymer clay earrings. I took the leap and launched my small business online in early 2021. My small business quickly grew into more than I could have imagined.
Now I work full-time creating jewelry and joining pop-up events in Corpus Christi and Austin. I’m making earrings out of various materials such as clay, resin, and acrylic. Each piece is handmade by me, making one-of-a-kind, delicately crafted items. The creative process and inspiration come from different people and ages. When I design my jewelry, I have to make sure that it is unique, a piece of jewelry that will represent you and make you feel beautiful and powerful.
What differentiates me from others is that I create beautiful jewelry with my whole heart and passion. I always want the best for my customers and I enjoy seeing their happy faces when they wear my earrings.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to continue making people happy when they wear my designs and be an inspiration and role model to my children that anything is possible if we work hard and never give up in order to achieve our goals.
My mission is to teach children or stay-at-home moms how to make jewelry for free.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, what matters to me is the joy I can give to my people. It doesn’t matter If I have to create these statement earrings for hours, what matters to me is the excitement and smiles I see on their faces when they wear my earrings. Or when they come back to me and tell me that they get compliments because of the earrings I made for them.
