We recently connected with Rocky Schenck and have shared our conversation below.
Rocky, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
Hopefully, my various artistic contributions over the years will be remembered and appreciated, but who knows? Thankfully, that’s out of my control, but I’ll attempt to remain optimistic and continue creating and sharing my art until I drop dead. I’m wildly thankful to hear from folks who enjoy my films and photos, and heaven knows I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers. I have no clue what people will say about me after I’ve left this world, or even when I’ve left the room, for that matter. Sadly, there will always be armies of backstabbers and naysayers, but fortunately I’ve encountered a few champions and supporters over the years, and they’re the ones that keep me going and continually inspire my creativity.
Rocky, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been a filmmaker, photographer, writer, and artist since I was a teenager… visit rockyschenck.com and rockyschenckofficial on Instagram for more info. I’ve been lucky to have worked with countless creative folks over the years – actors, directors, musicians, writers, celebrities, artists, oddballs and dreamers, including the legends, the losers, and the infamous. I’ve directed them in films and music videos I’ve written, and I’ve photographed them for magazines, album covers, advertising, publicity, etc. In between these professional projects, I shoot my personal photography, which I’ve exhibited in multiple art galleries around the world and in several books. I’m currently working on my next book of portraits, architecture, landscapes, and oddities, to be published in the near future.
I’ve also wanted to mention that my Nicole Kidman photos appeared on the Turner Classic Movie premiere of the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award to Nicole Kidman on June 27th. They also aired on TNT on June 17, 2024.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To continue pushing my imagination to the limits, and exploring new creative avenues and ideas… and always keep it interesting and amusing, if possible.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As a teenager, I made up my mind to be a filmmaker and move to Hollywood from the ranch in central Texas where I grew up to write and direct imaginative art films for the rest of my life. Needless to say, it didn’t work out quite as I had planned. I wrote, directed, photographed and edited multiple short films in my youth, but realized I also needed to make a living. I started utilizing the various tools I had learned from filmmaking to get jobs – leading me to a decades-long career writing and directing music videos and also becoming a commercial and fine art photographer. Thankfully, I’ve absolutely loved these various careers and the direction my life has taken over the years, but I’m now ready to return to my initial dream of creating art films. We’ll see what happens…
