We were lucky to catch up with ROCKWOOD PRODUCTIONS recently and have shared our conversation below.
ROCKWOOD, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I originally started making beats back in 2015, I was instantly in love with the process when a friend of mine showed me the software he found that was used to create music production. Over the years I thought to myself that I could be a great music producer and chased the craft day in and day out. The years of work it took to learn everything that entails music production was far from short. The information was scarce at the time. The knowledge was hard to find. Being successful in the music industry seemed like a pipe dream. I knew I had to put a plan in action if I wanted to be a successful and well known person in the music world. Making beats was the first step, making those beats be high quality was the next step and finally getting the clientele and hitting the Markey was the final step. Investing in great equipment was a vital piece to the puzzle. Learning different styles and genres was also a challenge. The process to make great sounding production was the bulk of time spent (years). Ultimately, in order to get to a point where I could become a business and have a product worth marketing I needed to practice and gain as much knowledge as humanly possible. It took me 15 years before I sold my first beat and landed a placement and started generating revenue off my beats. Rockwood productions came to fruition in 2017 and began to be a solid competitor in the local music scene.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always strived for excellence when it came to making beats. I wanted to be the next “alchemist” or “Dr.Dre” or “Timbaland” if you will. I am now a full time producer, mixing engineer, and a recording studio owner. I offer audio recording (tracking out vocals or instruments), custom music production, as well as mixing and mastering. I even go as far as management too, I handle 2 artists currently and help market and distribute their music to the world and publications to create as many opportunities as possible. My reputation alone has got myself and others through doors in the music industry and even into the film industry as well. I am proud to be a part of new up and coming musicians works in any capacity. I just want to see people succeed and grow. The new England area has tons of talented artists and creatives like myself and we need to make sure it is known to the world! You can find Rockwood productions on all streaming platforms and social media.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding a business or even inventory to start a business is hard. Whether you find an investor or you have to acquire funds on your own it is not easy. In my opinion the best way is to be the sole source of revenue and to manage that financial aspect yourself. It takes responsibility that will help later on when business starts to take off and become successful. The great thing is about starting out in the music business is that, you don’t need a lot of money to get started. All the equipment you need to get the ball rolling can be acquired for a few hundred dollars. You need to crawl before you can run!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best way to gain clientele is to have a great quality service or body of work that speaks for itself. The word of mouth will continue to find clients for you, provided you have something of high quality in return. Great quality for a competitive fee is what keeps you in the market. The market is always about supply and demand. You must be patient and understand that being successful and generating clients will take months sometimes years.
