We were lucky to catch up with Rockmyer Devone recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rockmyer thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
“The biggest risk in life is never taking your first step to being great.”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I began my journey as a filmmaker in 2017, when I in Dallas, TX. I had a really vivid dream and when I woke up, I wrote it down. It stuck with me for years and I couldn’t let it go. So one day in 2017 I decided to officially shoot it and the rest is history.
When I got to Atlanta, GA. in 2020 at the beginning of Covid, everything was shutdown. felt it was the prefect time to really get in my bag. I knew this move was the one and Atlanta was where I really wanted and needed to be. So I began writing like it was no tomorrow. Since, I’ve written and produced multiple film and television projects. My most recent being Love Connection which will be ready for release really soon.
I’m excited for 2024 cause I have some really major things in store.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Creativity is driven by a sense of purpose and responsibility. The driving force for my journey, is my desire is to build a bridge for those who have to make something out of nothing.
I’m just one of hundreds of thousands of minority men, who grow up in communities that are plagued by poverty, crime, and lack of opportunity. As a result, we feel a sense of urgency to find creative solutions to these challenges and create a better future for ourselves and families.
I feel like I speak for men across the country who look like me. It’s our dream to express ourselves by sharing our stories and experiences with the world. By creating art that reflects our unique experiences and struggles, allows us to connect with others who may be going through similar challenges and inspire change in their communities.
Today, so many a powerful outlets such as Tubi, YouTube, and Instagram, just to name a few, provides us with the ability to reach the world effortlessly and I feel like we’re just getting started. By using their creativity to effect change, they can help build a better future for themselves and others, and leave a lasting legacy of hope and inspiration.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
One of the most exciting aspects of creativity is that it’s not always a straight line. The process often involves experimentation, taking risks, trial and error, learning from mistakes and going back to the drawing board.
Creativity can be a vulnerable process. Sharing your ideas with others to whom you’re just getting to know and putting yourself out there can be intimidating, and it takes courage to do so.
However, it’s through this vulnerability that true innovation and breakthroughs occur. So if you’re feeling hesitant about embracing your creativity, remember that it’s a journey worth taking, and the rewards can be limitless.
