We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rockim Williamson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rockim below.
Alright, Rockim thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
I’d definitely understand the importance & practice the art of consistency at a sooner state. Throughout this journey I’ve been learning discipline & consistence, two qualities that could’ve skyrocketed my career had a started sooner. I also would’ve started taking classes at YouTube University a lot sooner lol
Rockim, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Rockim Williamson (Rah-Kim; yes like the rapper). I’ve been writing music since kindergarten, performing since the third grade, & releasing music since the sixth grade. I was born in Detroit, MI & grew up in the suburbs of Grosse Pointe. Music has always been apart of my story since an early age, in elementary school I attended Marvin L. Winans Academy of Performing Arts which left a imprint in my early memories. Going to school every day & being around the arts & many creatives, then going home & applying what I learned to my own aspirations left a spark in me that has yet to extinguish. My go-to genre of music is Hip Hop/R&B, I love to rap however I consider myself an “artist”. Art is subject & I appreciate the beauty in versatility. After hearing my story & listening to my music many people often put me in the category of “Christian Rap”. I’m not a christian rapper, I’m an artist who’s a christian.
I started taking my career in music much more serious my sophomore year in high school. I remember feeling stuck in my journey, looking for a sense of direction when God gave me the simple yet complex instruction to “create”. Over the years that lead me to create my brand “Confidence Creates” where my biggest mission is to be an example on the importance of creating with confidence. When I think about it, confidence can create many things. Jobs, opportunities, music, fashion, art, businesses, etc. Growing up confidence was my biggest hinder & also the thing that has saved my life in many ways. I “created” Confidence Creates for the little kid in me; as well as those who have a dream with little guidance, puzzle pieces with no instructions. I genuinely believe when we create with confidence, God can use what we have in ways we couldn’t even imagine.
As far as my art & the things I’ve created to date, I started a clothing line (Friends Support Their Friends) where I emphasize in the importance of supporting; support isn’t just monetary. My music is across all streaming platforms big, small, & has currently been played in over 20 different countries with articles written about my creations in different languages as well. My favorite slogan is “Google Me’.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’d say one of the most rewarding aspect is being able to express what I want how & when I want. Being an artist has brought people in my life, pushed some out of my life, brought unanswered questions, unexpected life experiences, etc. I’m also an empath & very emotional. Therapy is not cheap at all, but being an artist gives me a way to let things go; vent. It allows me tap into a different side of myself. I’m able to cry for help, express the magnitude of my love, deal with heartbreaks, talk to people without actually speaking to them, all while hopefully being able to relate to someone else who may be going through something similar. Often times I feel like certain things I’m going through, I’m the only one going through them, until I listen to a song where the lyrics feel like they’re speaking directly to me. Hitting things that I didn’t even know I could relate to. I love how music is the universal language.
