We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rochell Malay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rochell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
It took over five years before i started earning a profit and paid myself. I money i made from my business in invested back into my brand. I even had to work a part time job from time to time to support myself and my business until it became profitable. The life of an entrepreneur is not always fun glitter and glam. When people started seeing how passionate I was about my brand and how I not only invested my time and money into building something so great then that’s when they started backing with support. I believe i could have sped up the process a lot faster by getting loans and having a support system from the very beginning but my journey i wouldn’t change a thing because it has taught me so much as a creative and entrepreneur. I have grown so much and learn so much. My entrepreneur journey has definitely made me tough.
Rochell, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Rochell Malay creative director of the Mega Brand Alex Malay. I’m very passionate about what i do. when i first stated my business i was the model, boss, creative director, customer service, and shipping and receiving. I did it all i know every aspect of my business and how things work. Now that my brand has grown I focus more on the creative side, like putting together high fashion fashion shows in the gardens or Winter Wonderland in the snow. I also love to create content for my brand. I love the beauty and inspiration side how my brand is a lifestyle brand that tells a story through beauty and fashion.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being a creative is very rewarding when you see your creation come to life and you get feed back from people all over the world telling you how amazing it is and how it changed their life and inspired them to continue on their journey. Thats the feeling I love, the impact my brand give changing lives making a difference.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There were so many times i wanted to give up and quit but something inside of me just wouldn’t let me stop. I’m built for this because i just cant let it go i cant stop even if my world is falling apart i get up and create. I remember i had to close my boutique my store which i was so proud of because i worked so hard to get there and save to open and when i close it three years later i felt so defeated i just wanted to give up and throw in the towel but something inside of me side keep going. I cant stop i want stop.
