Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rochell Clay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rochell, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
It all started behind the chair of a hair salon. I’ve always been drawn to people—listening to their stories, understanding their emotions, and helping them feel seen and heard. That natural instinct to care and connect led me to start as a hairstylist. On the surface, it seemed like an unusual choice, but as I spent years behind the salon chair, I realized that this was where I found my calling to finish my education as a mental health counselor.
The salon was more than just a place where people came to enhance their beauty—it was a space of vulnerability, of transformation. Every snip of the scissors, a new style, was a symbolic act of change. The mirror became a reflection of more than just a new hairstyle; it was a reflection of how my clients felt, how they were doing deep inside. I began to notice patterns: people would sit in my chair, open up, and share parts of their lives with me. They trusted me with their insecurities, their triumphs, their heartbreaks. Sometimes, I was the first person to hear about the weight they were carrying.
Over time, I realized that my role as a hairstylist was so much more than a technical job. I wasn’t just shaping hair—I was shaping a moment of comfort, of solace. I could see how deeply people needed someone to listen, someone to care. I could sense their struggles, but I didn’t always have the tools to help them heal in a meaningful way.
One evening, after a particularly emotional conversation with a client, it hit me: I was already providing a form of therapy, but I wasn’t equipped to support them the way they truly needed. It was in that moment that my defining shift occurred. I understood that my passion wasn’t just about helping people look good on the outside, but helping them feel whole on the inside. I wanted to give them the tools, the support, and the resources to truly heal, not just for a moment, but for a lifetime.
I knew that in order to do this, I needed to expand my knowledge, my skillset, and my understanding of the human psyche. So, I took a leap of faith, and began my journey toward becoming a mental health therapist. It wasn’t an easy path; it meant going back to school, after marriage, having 3 children and dedicating myself to a new kind of learning, and facing a lot of doubts and fears. But every step I took reinforced what I already knew: I was on the right path.
The transition wasn’t just a career change—it was a transformation of purpose. My experience as a hairstylist gave me a deep understanding of the importance of trust, of connection, of safe spaces. These qualities seamlessly translated into my new role as a therapist. I was able to take the skills I had honed in the salon—the art of listening, the ability to read body language, the empathy—and apply them in a therapeutic setting.
Now, as a mental health therapist, I help people navigate their emotional journeys, just as I once helped them feel good about their physical appearance. I create a space where they can shed their emotional weight and begin to heal, The salon chair and the therapy couch are both places where transformation happens, where people can start anew. It’s not about fixing someone—it’s about meeting them where they are, holding space for them, and walking alongside them as they find their own strength.
The defining moment for me was realizing that true beauty, true transformation, comes from within. And I’m honored that my journey led me to a place where I can guide others toward discovering their own inner peace and strength. Whether it’s through the power of a haircut or the power of a therapeutic conversation, I now know that healing takes many forms—and I’m grateful to be part of that process.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Rochell Denise Clay, a mental health counselor and the founder of Nala Counseling & Wellness, a telehealth practice serving Texas and New Mexico. My heart is in helping people heal, grow, and find emotional balance. From a young age, I was drawn to listening and connecting with others, and through my own life experiences, I discovered my true calling—walking alongside people as they navigate their challenges and work toward a more fulfilling life.
I started out as a solo therapist, building my own independent practice as a Black female entrepreneur. Over time, that small dream grew into something bigger—Nala Counseling & Wellness, a thriving group practice. Our mission is simple: Healing Mind-Body-Spirit—One session at a time. The vision of Nala Counseling & Wellness is to provide Integrative, whole-person, soul-centred healing for all. We offer virtual therapy for a variety of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and personal growth. With a culturally sensitive approach and services in both English and Spanish, we create a safe, supportive space where people from all backgrounds can open up, feel heard, and develop tools to navigate life’s challenges.
What makes me—and our team—different is our commitment to truly understanding each person’s unique journey. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. Everyone’s needs, background, and goals are different, so sessions should be personalized to fit you and move at your pace. Our goal is to empower our clients by helping them gain deeper insight into themselves and their emotions. We’re here to support you in creating a more fulfilling, balanced life—on your terms.
As a Black female therapist, one of the things I’m most proud of is witnessing the incredible transformations my clients experience. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing women—especially those who, like me, have felt lost or overwhelmed—slowly regain their confidence, take control of their lives, and find a sense of peace. Healing takes time, but with support, patience, and self-compassion, growth is always possible.
If you’re thinking about therapy, know that it’s a space for growth, self-discovery, and healing. Our goal isn’t just to help you get through the tough moments—it’s to give you the tools and insight to step into a more confident, empowered version of yourself. Healing is possible, and we’re honored to walk this journey with you.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I truly believe that being a great mental health counselor isn’t just about training and knowledge—it’s about building a real, compassionate connection with clients. When people feel safe, understood, and respected, they’re able to open up, be vulnerable, and fully engage in the healing process. Feeling heard and valued makes it easier to explore challenges, share emotions, and take meaningful steps toward growth.
For me, it all comes down to trust, honesty, and being real with my clients. I want them to know I’m fully invested in their journey and that they’re never alone in it. Everyone has a story, and I’m always deeply honored when someone chooses to share theirs with me.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Building my reputation as a therapist has been a journey rooted in authenticity, empathy, and cultural understanding. I’ve always prioritized creating a safe, inclusive space where people feel truly seen and heard—especially those who may have felt overlooked or misunderstood in traditional therapy settings. My clients appreciate that I bring not just professional expertise, but also a genuine, relatable presence that connects with their lived experiences.
As a registered yoga instructor, I also integrate mindfulness, movement, and breathwork into my approach when it aligns with a client’s needs. Yoga and therapy work hand in hand, helping to create balance between the mind and body while promoting deeper self-awareness. This holistic perspective allows me to support my clients in ways that go beyond just talk therapy.
By being transparent, empathetic, and open about my own journey, I’ve been able to build trust with clients. I believe in showing up as my true self, which helps others feel comfortable doing the same. The combination of my clinical training, cultural competency, and ability to understand my clients’ unique struggles has helped me build a reputation as someone who genuinely listens, cares, and supports growth. Word of mouth has been powerful—when clients feel understood and valued, they naturally share that experience with others who need the same kind of support and connection.
