We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robyn Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Robyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

Technically, I’m supposed to be going into my 6th year as an elementary school teacher but somewhere along the way, everything changed!

I just finished earning my B.S in Early Childhood Education and moved to California. While waiting to be entered into the system in San Diego County, I wanted something to do. I’ve always been productive whether being involved in in-school activities, after school activities, working or enjoying life. I didn’t want to stand idle waiting for the school district so I thought about different things to do to earn income.

Throughout my relationship with my now husband, he would constantly point out how interested, engaged and involved I was with hair, specifically braids. I would braid my own hair, friends and family at times, constantly watch Youtube videos on braid installs, had tons of Pinterest boards about braids and natural hair styles and my social media was filled with braid styles! The difference between myself and everyone else I was seeing was I wanted it done the healthy way. Many times we only think of the end result but not necessarily how our hair will react in the long run.

Thinking back on our conversations and realizing my own interest I have in braiding, I decided to jump into it. At the time, I contacted the wife of my husbands co-worker to braid her hair to have a walking advertisement. My very first client is still my client and has seen first hand how God has been enlarging my territory ever since!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Robyn Tomas. Wife to Quincey Thomas of 7 years, mother of two boys (3 & 1) and owner of Resemble Me by Robyn. Resemble Me by Robyn is a full service natural hair braidery that aids in healthy hair growth for Afro textured hair through protective braiding styles. Yes, the end result is important, however, it is not the only focus with me. I pride myself on properly installing protective styles that are pain free and suitable for one’s current hair condition, while providing protective styling tips to ensure their protective style is protecting.

Along with healthy protective braiding styling services, I also offer personal hair coaching in my Hair Retention Programs. Through those programs it is my mission to teach you how to choose protective styles suitable for your hair and how to properly care for your hair while in your protective style as we journey together to wearing your crown comfortably and proud! Our programs offer priority booking, specialized products and specialized hair plans that align with specific needs and MORE!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

Definitely doing something different. There are tons of braiders but not many who specialize in making hair care a priority with braids. Growing up braids was just a style you put in to not have to worry about your hair. As time has passed, I have realized how delicate and how much care our natural hair needs in some of the most common styles we wear.

I emphasize teaching hair health with a variety of very popular braid styles so women are able to love the tresses that come out of your scalp and wear them proudly!

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?

Creating a rapport with my clients with hopes of them enjoying their experience so much to refer me to their friends and associates. I communicate thoroughly and with respect. I offer things such as including hair for my most popular service and having it prepped upon arrival which saves time both before and during an appointment, privacy to create whatever environment you’re in need of and more while installing pain free braids that are sure to beautifully last.
